“Tru texted that she wanted to go home. She’s at a friend’s right now. I can’t be in two places and…” I ran my fingers through my hair. “I wish Laura were here.”

“East.” She squeezed my arm. “You’ll get through this; you all will.”

“How can you say that, Jennifer? You don’t even know what’s wrong with him.”

“Just a feeling. Look, go home tonight and be with Tru. She needs you just as much as Milo does. Finch is here, and I’ll be here until about two in the morning. I will come back tomorrow afternoon, though. Milo’s in good hands.”

“Let me get him settled at least.”

“Good plan. Come on, this is his room here. You’ll need to wear a mask in this unit when walking around.”

I looked up and read the sign: Pediatric Specialty Care.

I took the mask she offered and slipped it on.

“Every child has their own room in this unit. They’re clean rooms, which means masks are always worn outside of their room. Milo won’t have to wear one once he’s in here, and you’re fine not to wear yours since you’ve been with him, but anyone else who enters must because they are associating with other people. If you leave and return it’s up to you and Milo in the room, but outside, no matter what, mask up.”

“His low counts are making him susceptible to everything?”

“Possibly. We don’t want to take any chances.”

The room was nice—a great view of Lorelei Lake and Amaris Mountains farther out.

With nothing left to do but wait for Milo to get here, I texted Tru and let her know I’d be leaving within the hour to take her home.

CHAPTER FOUR

Finch

“I’m kind of hungry,” Milo said softly as he was rolled into the service elevator.

“As soon as we get you settled, we can get you something to eat.”

The corners of his mouth curled up and he appeared relaxed…well, as much as someone in the hospital could be. I didn’t sense any pain radiating off him, so I knew my magic was taking good care of him.

“Can I have anything I want?”

Chuckling, I answered, “I want to say yes to that, but I suspect you’re a smart kid, and you might ask for something like a fifty-layered cake.”

His laugh went right to my heart. “I was just going to ask for a cheeseburger and fries.”

“Oh, yeah, I can totally make that happen. What about to drink?”

He shrugged. “I dunno, chocolate milk?”

“Easily doable.”

The elevator dinged, and he was rolled out and down the corridor. I slid my card into the slot for the doors to his ward to open, pulled my mask up, and made sure to hand one to Milo. Jemma waved when she saw us.

“I hear I’ve got you all night?” She winked. She was a bit of a flirt, but she understood that while I adored her, she wasn’t my type.

“Actually, I’m at Milo’s beck and call this evening.”

She gasped dramatically and looked over at the boy who, judging by his eyes, had a sweet smile on his face.

“You got Finch to be your private nurse for the evening? How did you manage that?”

Milo shrugged again. It was easy to see he was shy, so I answered for him.
