“That’s it; nothing else will matter.” Easton ruffled Milo’s hair.

“Okay, after you eat I will go track down a console. Which do you usually play on?”

“I can bring his handheld from home in the morning.”

“That’s great, but in the meantime, what can I get for you?”

Milo’s nose scrunched. “Do you have PlayStation?”

“We do! And don’t tell anyone, but I happen to know where there’s a PS5.” I wiggled my brows.

“No way!” Milo’s happiness was exactly what Easton needed to see. He was going to be leaving his son in a hospital so he could be with his other child. That wasn’t easy, and I wanted him to understand that Milo would be my top priority.

While we waited for the food to arrive, Milo and Easton chose a movie and I went about my nursing duties. I checked blood pressure and drew blood through the IV, which Milo watched like a hawk. I’d make sure that while I was here he’d feel no pain.

Dr. Perry had explained earlier that she wouldn’t be ordering anything but blood labs through the night. Any procedures they wanted to do would take place when Easton returned the following day.

Looking at Milo, you wouldn’t know his counts were as low as they were. It was quite interesting.

Someone knocked on the door and Milo jumped.

“It’s okay, little guy, it’s your food. Keep watching your movie; I’ll get it.”

I let them in and they placed Milo’s tray on his table while Easton took his.

“I texted Tru and told her I’d be a bit later, and she asked me to tell you to call her after I leave.” Easton began helping Milo with his food.

“Okay.”

I leaned against the small counter, watching father and son. My heart warmed as they mimicked each other, ate and laughed the same—even their mannerisms were identical.

“I’m going to let you two be together. Easton, when you’re ready to go, you’ll find me at the nurses’ station right outside this door.”

He wiped the crumbs from his lips, and one side of his mouth lifted.

“Thanks, Finch.”

I left them to their action movie and burgers and slipped out. I shot a text to Dr. Perry with an update, and she said she’d come up soon to talk to Easton before he left.

I took the time to sit at the computer and update Milo’s file.

CHAPTER FIVE

Easton

Dr. Perry reassured me that all they would be doing overnight would be monitoring Milo. The blood they had taken from Milo was being tested for a slew of possibilities. We were in the “wait and wait longer” stage.

Finch was…well, amazing, honestly. Milo didn’t even cry when I said good-bye. Finch was in the reclining seat next to him, and they were getting ready to play a few rounds of Mortal Kombat.

As I walked to my truck in the parking garage, I waited for the worry to hit me that he wasn’t safe or okay or that he needed me. It never came. Not as I got into my truck, not even as I drove farther away from my son.

“Maybe that nurse really is magic.” I snorted and turned onto the highway toward Tru’s friend’s house.

“Hey, Paula.” I smiled wearily at Tru’s friend’s mother, who’d opened the door.

“Hey, Easton. You look exhausted. Did you eat? I was just putting dinner away.”

“I’m good. I ate with Milo a little while ago.”
