I halted buttoning my pants. “You won’t.”

He narrowed his eyes but didn’t respond. Instead, he turned to Daisy.

“Get Milo to safety. Call on the protectors. Father wants a war, he gets a war.”

“Finch.”

“Do it, Daisy. That’s an order.”

“Yes, sir.”

She disappeared and I slipped my shoes on, all the while not taking my eyes off Finch.

“What do we do now?”

It could’ve been my imagination, but I swore his bright-blue hair was darkening.

“Now, we go get your daughter, and make every one of them pay.”

His gaze met mine and no, I wasn’t imagining anything. His eyes were darkening too.

“What’s happening to you, Finch?”

“I’m fine, Easton.” He stepped up in front of me. “You listen very carefully to me. I will get Tru to safety. When I give her to you, you run, you hear me? Don’t look back, take her and get as far away as you can.”

“What about you? I can’t leave you.”

His smile was frightening.

“You will leave me, Easton. Your job is to protect your children, and mine is to save you all.”

“They’ll kill you.”

“They’ll try.”

“Baby, I can’t?—”

He clutched my face once more and pulled me into a bruising kiss.

“I love you, Easton Kooper. I love your family, and I promised that little girl I’d keep you safe, that I would keep you all protected. I’m bound by that promise. So when I say run, you will go. You’ll do it for your children. I need to end this.”

“Finch…”

“This is how it is.”

“Please don’t die.”

“Promise me you’ll live.”

It felt like good-bye. I wasn’t fae; my promises could be broken.

“I’ll run, I’ll live, I promise.”

With one last kiss we were racing out the door.
