Easton and I were in his truck, driving toward Amaris Mountains. Daisy was ordered to assemble the protectors loyal to my mother’s side. I hoped they’d be there by the time we arrived, but it wouldn’t matter. I was going into those mountains and pulling Tru out of my sister’s clutches.

With Arachnis being held in the fae realm, it should have been no surprise that my father had preyed on Amaris’s anger over her brother being punished. Milo and Easton were off-limits, but the second Tru had revealed she wasn’t gifted the same way, he’d seen it as an opportunity.

“I have gear in the back of my truck,” Easton said as he turned onto the narrow road leading to the base of the mountains.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him his gear was no match for fae, but he also had the fire of a father burning inside him, and I hoped that would keep him alive.

“When we can drive no farther, make sure to suit up then.”

“Is Daisy going to be able to get help?”

I knew she would. “Of course.” I turned and stared at his profile.

Easton glared at the road before him, rage rippling from every muscle on his body. Against another human Easton would surely prevail. Hopefully, with the command to stand down in place Easton would be spared in all this.

“How did you know it was my mother in your dream?”

“Her eyes.”

I’d often heard from many that she and I shared that attribute.

“Zephyr tried to warn me.”

Easton glanced at me quickly but returned his attention to the road.

“Your brother…he’s the middle-ground guy?”

I chuckled. “He leans more on the side of my father. When it came time to choose, he went with him and I went with my mother.”

“And he warned you?”

“Not about this specifically, but that there wasn’t a perfect way out of this. I didn’t listen, because for the longest time I haven’t been able to trust him. But he said something interesting.”

The road became bumpier, and I knew we’d be walking soon.

“What’s that?”

“He said he chose the winning side. But what if he’s not joined to the right one? What if Zephyr sees that?”

Easton scoffed. “You can’t trust someone who flip-flops like that, Finch.”

“I suppose not.” I sighed. “I’m not sure he really wanted to go with my father.”

“When this is over, maybe he’ll change sides, and maybe you’ll accept him with open arms, but I’d never blink around him.”

Easton was right. However this played out, I wasn’t sure Zephyr would ever change.

The truck jolted to a stop. “I can’t drive any farther.” He opened his door and jumped out, immediately going to the bed of the truck.

“Which way do we go?” He was hauling his gear out and getting dressed.

I held up a hand and closed my eyes. I could smell the decay and despair of the mountains, but I was also able to home in on the magic and locate the area where it was strongest. That would be where Amaris was with Tru.

I bent down and pressed my hand to the earth. The land rippled with strength and beneath that, the threads of magic that weaved the fae realm and the human one interlaced with each other.

It pulsed under my palm. I dug my fingers into the damp dirt, reaching, pushing my magic outward, searching for the resistance and…

“There,” I whispered and stood up. “North, that’s where she is.”
