“Don’t walk along that dark path, Mr. Kooper. It will consume you. Stay in the light, and it’ll guide you.”

“Call me Easton. And those are some wise words.”

“Well, Easton, I’m going to tell them we are on our way up. Would you like to gently wake the prince and let him know we’re on the move?”

“I can do that.”

Once Finch left, I stood and brushed my hand over Milo’s forehead.

“Hey, Buddy, can you open your eyes for me?”

He grunted but blinked them open. “Dad?”

“Yeah, I just wanted to let you know they’re moving you up to your room. Finch didn’t want you waking up on your way there and getting frightened.”

Milo sat up a little and searched the space.

“He just went to tell them you were ready to go. He’ll be right back.”

“And he’s really staying with me tonight?”

I nodded. “That’s what he said.”

Milo immediately relaxed. It was obvious the nurse kept him calm, and I was grateful.

The door opened and Finch once again came in, this time with a dash of fanfare.

“The prince is awake! Wondrous news! Your chariot awaits; we shall bring you to your royal chamber.” He even used a dramatic English accent.

Milo chuckled. “I’m ready.”

An orderly entered, and I quickly got out of the way.

“If you want to meet us up there, Dad, he will be on the seventh floor, room seven-two-seven. You need to be buzzed in there, but I’ll call up to Jemma and let her know. We have to take the service elevator. You’ll totally beat us up there.”

I looked over at Milo. “Is that okay with you, Buddy?”

“Yeah, Finch is staying with me, right?”

“But of course.” He lifted a clear bag. “I’m carrying all of your worldly possessions, and I’ll keep the IV pole steady.”

“Okay. I’ll be fine, Dad.”

I squeezed Milo’s foot since that was all I could reach of him. “See you in a few.”

The hospital was a maze, but there were a lot of helpful people who were able to guide me to the correct bank of elevators. When the doors opened, there were three hallways in front of me.

“Lost?”

I turned and found Dr. Perry.

“So lost. Finch said Milo was going to seven-two-seven, which corridor?”

“I’ll take you. I was at the nurses’ station when he called Jemma, and I knew you’d get lost.”

“Thanks.” I snorted.

We walked side by side. “Are you staying all night?” she asked.
