Page 74 of Hurt Me Not

Easton stopped, turned, and pointed right at me. “You clearly stated that you weren’t supposed to show me your true form. Don’t you think if your brother is found guilty, you will be too?”

It was a very good possibility. Daisy and I both knew my father would make me suffer if Arachnis had to.

“I had good reason; I’m sure it’ll work out.”

“Work out?” Easton scoffed. “So we live our lives as if choices aren’t being made that could impact us all?”

“I think you need to take this reprieve to think about my offer.” Daisy moved closer to Easton. “You’re unraveling, and it’s not good for your kids. I have the power to make it go away, at least in your head and heart.”

Easton glanced at me, then back to Daisy. “Does he forget?”

“No.” She didn’t hiccup when she answered. “Fae must remember.”

“Why?”

“Usually it’s for punishment and to make sure they have control to stay away…at least that’s what all the books say. In truth, you can’t erase a fae’s mind. Humans are easy.”

Easton rolled his eyes. “Your hierarchy isn’t any better than human’s.”

Smirking, I joined Easton and Daisy. “In the years I’ve been here, I can say I agree.”

Easton sighed and ran his fingers through his thick brown hair. “Forgetting you…I don’t like thinking about that.”

“Right now it affects you,” Daisy said. “Once we are all forgotten, you’ll not hurt.”

Easton froze. He was a ball of unstoppable energy a second ago, suddenly he stilled. His expression was unreadable, and I wondered if he’d been struck or if something had happened.

He took one step, then two, and wrapped me in his arms. It was an all-consuming hug, one that stayed with you long after the person was gone. One you never forgot.

“I can’t do it.”

“Can’t do what?” I whispered as I returned his bone-crushing embrace.

“Forget you, Finch. I don’t think there’s magic in either of our worlds powerful enough for that.” He stepped away, his face soft, sweet, and a little broken. “I’d know something was missing; I’d mourn a memory I couldn’t grasp.”

“Our magic is strong, Easton.” Daisy spoke as if he were questioning her gifts…but no, he wasn’t.

“Love is stronger than anything,” he said. “You can try to wipe my mind, but I’ll never forget Finch Brightkin…I wouldn’t want to.”

His eyes glistened, but it was my tears that fell.

“Oh, Easton, I wouldn’t want you to ever forget me, but the kids, their safety.”

“I know it makes no sense, Finch. I should sacrifice how I’m feeling right now with you for all of us. But I can’t stop thinking about the dreams.”

“What dreams?” Daisy popped our bubble.

“Milo and I dreamed of Finch before we knew what he was. Laura being there, giving us her blessing to love you…that’s not nothing. And normally I’d laugh that it was a stupid dream or two, but with everything I’ve seen the last few days, I’m going to cling to it. She’d never put us in harm’s way.”

“Interesting.” Daisy hummed.

I needed to ask Daisy why that was interesting, but Easton was saying things that made me want to grab him and the kids and fly far, far away.

“Easton, it’s going to be so dangerous.”

“It will likely be dangerous no matter what.” He traced over my cheek with a callused finger. “You can’t forget us. Your father would hunt me and my children to the ends of the earth just to hurt you, wouldn’t he?”

He absolutely would. “So you’d rather be hunted and remember than not know why?”
