“Sure thing. That’s nice of you to do.”

“How do you have that stuff?” Finch rested his chin on his hand.

His smiled dimmed a bit. “It was Mom’s; she liked to record the birds. Dad said I could have it after…I thought this would be cool.”

“It definitely is.” Finch rubbed Milo’s arm and the way he regarded Finch, sadness washing away to joy, I realized that with Finch gone, with his memory vanished, I’d be taking all the happiness with it.

“Done with classes?” Daisy asked.

“No. I got history soon.”

“Welp, eat up.” Daisy shot me a look that screamed of choices I had to make.

I left the three of them to put the map away. What do I do? Why are these the choices? Remember him and maybe die, forget him and maybe live.

Those weren’t choices at all. Even though I wouldn’t remember Finch, I believed a piece of my heart would always know what was missing.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Finch

Easton avoided me for most of the day. I understood that he had a lot to think about, and I in no way wanted to invade his thoughts. I hung out with Milo and later Tru, while Easton played off feeling sore and having to rest.

When evening came, Daisy, who’d left after breakfast, finally returned with news.

Milo and Tru were watching a movie, and the three of us went to the backyard.

“The court has ordered your father to stand down while they investigate what Arachnis did. He was warned that if he makes any retaliation toward Easton or his family, there will be serious consequences.”

“Do you think he’ll listen?” Easton picked at the label of his beer.

“I believe for now he will. Arachnis is his twisted and perfect child, the only one aside from Amaris that listens and abides by his orders without question. He wants to be sure Arachnis isn’t under the microscope. To ensure he’s safe, he likely won’t want to make waves.”

Easton bit his lip and nodded.

“For now, everyone is safe?” I hoped this relaxed Easton but I couldn’t tell.

“Yes.”

Daisy looked between me and Easton.

“Okay.” I clapped my hands together. “I’ll go to my place, then. Daisy, you’ll stay here.”

Easton’s head shot up from where he was concentrating on the label.

“You’re leaving?”

“I’m going home. I can’t stay here and…” I sighed and reached for Easton’s hands. He had a death grip on that beer. “You need to think about a lot of stuff, and I’m in the way.”

“You’re not in the way.”

“I don’t think it’s good for you to be alone, Finch.” Daisy’s tone was curt.

“I’m sure you’ll have eyes on me, but you’re the best at what you do, and the kids know you. It’s logical you stay right here.”

“You’re just going to go about your business?” Easton set his beer down and stood. “How can you?” Now he was pacing.

“Easton, I believe the courts on both sides will see Arachnis’s fault in this, and it will work in our favor.”
