“I definitely love working with kids and the elderly the most. They light up my life.”

“What you’ve done for Milo, I’ll never forget.”

His visible joy shot an arrow right to every nerve ending in my body, and I reached over and like a perfectly in sync dance, he slid his hand into mine.

Our food came, and I spent as much time watching him as I did eating. He truly was enchanting.

I was so enamored with him, I didn’t notice someone had come up to the table until Finch spoke.

“Hello.”

I turned, and it was as if I’d been inside a bubble and it was about to pop.

“Well, hello.” Jim Hastings had a shit-eating grin on.

Finch’s brow crinkled, and he glanced at me. It was the push I needed to finally speak.

“Jim, uh, hey. This is Finch. Finch, Jim Hastings, he’s one of my firefighters and a friend.”

Finch held out his hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“Oh, no, no, no. It’s very nice to meet you.” He shook his hand and faced me with a quirked brow.

“So, what brings you to this fancy restaurant I’m sure you’ve never been to before?” I wondered.

“Is that why you picked it, Boss? A place no one could find you and your…date?”

Finch pursed his lips, and the slight narrowing of his eyes was enough for me to know Jim was annoying him.

“Finch is my date, and I wanted to take him to a place as lovely as he is.”

Finch’s blush was adorable. “And I’m having an amazing time, thank you.”

“I’m glad.”

Finch turned his head toward Jim. “Are you here with anyone?”

Jim’s grin fell, and suddenly I knew he hadn’t thought things through. There wasn’t a question in my mind who he was here with, and he had absolutely come to The Enchanted Lily because he’d believed he wouldn’t bump into anyone who would recognize him.

I relaxed in my seat and smirked. “Where is Trish hiding?” I made a show of searching the restaurant.

“Trish?” He scoffed. He’d obviously taken the plunge and asked her out on a date.

“Is that your wife?” Finch tilted his head, truly curious since he had no idea what was going on here.

I laughed, maybe a little too loudly. “He wishes.”

“Whatever. But if you must know, we just got here and she’s using the restroom. I saw you from our table.”

“You’ll have to have her stop by and say hello.” Yeah, I could totally turn this around on him.

“Uh, okay.”

“Well, if you’ll excuse us, I’d like to continue with my date.”

“Right.” He waved like a goof. “Nice meeting you, Finch. Have a good night.”

“You too, Jim.” Finch chuckled as Jim darted away and returned to his table. “Did you just come out to your friend?”
