I shrugged because while I knew this was a big deal, it felt natural to me.

“Are you okay?” We’d released our hands when Jim arrived, but he placed his on top of mine.

“I am. Is it weird? Should I be freaking out?”

“There are no rules on this, Easton. How you feel is how you feel.”

“Then I feel perfect right now.”

We shared a tiramisu after dinner and talked about the most mundane things from shows we’d binge-watched to our favorite books.

I wasn’t sure if dating was always this easy but with Finch, it was as easy as breathing.

I dropped Finch off home, and as much as I wanted to go inside with him and lick every inch of his body, a larger part of me wanted to take a step back and do this properly. So, I walked him to the door and kissed him senseless, happy to see he appeared kiss-drunk as I pulled away.

All the way home, I replayed our night and how wonderful it was. Even after Trish had come over to our table and laughed, not believing I was on a date with a man.

Finch let me handle it, but there was no hiding how irritated he’d gotten and I’d be sure to have words with Jim and Trish another day.

Daisy was sitting on the couch, watching some docuseries about a couple who’d had something horrible happen to them and the justice system not believing them. I’d seen it and it was messed up.

“Hey,” I greeted her as I tossed my keys into the bowl.

“Have fun?” She shut the TV off and walked over to me.

“It was great. Are the kids asleep?” I glanced at my watch; it read nine o’clock.

“Milo is—he said he was really tired.” I opened my mouth, ready to likely freak out, but she held up her hand to stop me.

“He has no fever, he allowed me to listen to his chest, and with Tru present I examined his abdomen and checked his blood pressure. Everything was fine, but when he goes to the clinic, just mention it. This isn’t abnormal.”

“Okay, thank you, Daisy. It’s a real bonus you’re a nurse.”

She snorted, which confused me, but tried to cover it up with a grin. “A definite advantage. Tru is in her room; she got a call from her friend Stephanie.”

“Okay, here.” I pulled out some cash, but she shook her head.

“No, please, it was a pleasure. You have fantastic kids, and I had far too much fun to accept money from you.”

“Oh, please. I don’t want to take advantage of you.”

“You’re not. Anytime, I had a good time.”

“Next time I’m paying you, so accept at your own peril.”

She patted my arm on her way by. “You seem like a great guy, Easton.”

“Thanks?”

“Finch is special.” She got to the door, had her hand on the knob, but before she turned it, she looked over at me.

“Promise no matter what, you’ll remember this moment and how you feel about him.”

It was an odd thing to ask but an easy thing to answer.

“I promise.”

“Those two words mean everything to me, so mean it.” And with that, she was gone.
