Daisy quirked a brow and must have realized I was going to make her do something she wouldn’t like.

“Oh? Who?”

“Do you remember Daisy from the hospital?”

“I do. She took care of Milo several times; she’s sweet.”

I snorted and Daisy clearly heard what Easton said, judging by her narrowed gaze.

“She’s a wonderful nurse and actually, why don’t you talk to her?” I smiled and handed the phone to her and if looks could kill, I’d be toast.

“Hello, Mr. Kooper…Okay, Easton…Yes, I am free tomorrow night and would be happy to watch your kiddos.” The entire time Daisy was talking to Easton, she was shooting daggers at me.

“My pleasure. I’m so happy I can help so the two of you can go out.”

When she handed the phone back I said my good-byes, slipped it into my pocket, and moved to get up.

“Pump your brakes, Finch.” Daisy grabbed my arm. “Your mother asked me here to protect you, not those kids.”

“And you know that while she gave you that order, you still have to listen to me as the highest royal in this realm.”

“Not if I inform her of this new directive you’ve given me.”

“Daisy.” I needed her to understand this and what her job was becoming. “My father is searching for any way to get control over me and drag me to the fae realm for punishment. Those kids are a ticket he will soon realize he can punch, and I need you to protect them.”

“Finch, you are protecting these kids that aren’t yours. You can never love them or at least tell them you do and you’re having, what, a relationship with a human you can never let get anywhere…why?”

I’d been asking myself this question every day since I’d realized my feelings were growing.

“I’m not asking you to understand…Okay, I guess I am, actually, but maybe you can just do this for me. The consequences will be my own.”

“This is a dangerous game you’re playing, Prince Finch Brightkin. Your mother will not be happy.”

A flash of anger swept through me. “I don’t think you know my mother very well if you think she wouldn’t be happy for me. Worried, yes, but also happy and maybe even proud.”

With that, I turned on my heel and walked away.

A buzz of excitement filled me as I dressed for my date with Easton. He said the place he was taking me to was classy but no need for black tie. Suits were not something I enjoyed. They were confining, and while my glamour hid my wings—the space where they would normally be merely tingled to the touch—I could still feel them being flattened in suits. It was like a phantom ache, and when Easton placed a hand where they’d be, he felt nothing.

I had brought with me from the fae realm what could be deemed a suit. It was loose, an ivory color, and the material was made from things you could only find over there. It was unique for sure, but it definitely fit the dress code.

I pinned my hair half up and clipped tiny jewels in it, added a swipe of eyeliner I found I very much loved, and I was good to go.

There was a knock a minute before he’d messaged that he would arrive. When I opened the door, my brain short-circuited. He was wearing a black suit with a crisp white shirt underneath. No tie but I could see his delicious chest hair peeking out. His hair was styled, his facial hair was immaculate…sugarplum fairies, he was yummy.

“You look amazing.” I sounded winded, but lust did crazy things to me.

When there was no response, I noticed Easton’s gaze traveling over my body.

What if he didn’t like how I was dressed? Was the eyeliner too much? The jewels too bizarre?

“Finch,” he said breathlessly. “You’re stunning.”

Well, I guess that answered that question. “Thank you.”

He held out his hand, his smile brighter than the moon. “Shall we?”

I slid my hand into his and stepped out. I let go only to lock the door but entwined my fingers with his as we walked to his truck.
