“Sure.”

I followed behind him, his blue hair shimmering under the lights…Did it always do that?

“I’m sorry,” Finch blurted the second we were away from Milo and anyone else.

“You don’t owe me anything, Finch. Whatever your reason, I understand.” There was no way I was going to tell him I was upset. I didn’t want to scare him, and if he knew how attached I was getting to him, he’d probably run.

“You asked me out on a date, I said yes, and afterward I didn’t get back to you. I saw your text, and I never answered.”

“Why?”

He sighed, and it was as if the weight of the world rested on his shoulders.

“When I came home from your house some of my family was there, and it got heated. I was dealing with that, and I wasn’t going to drag anyone down with me. I should have at least messaged you and said I was dealing with something, but?—”

“We aren’t defined, and we don’t know what’s allowed.”

“Yeah.”

“That’s why I didn’t text you asking why you were ignoring me.” I snorted. “We’re adults acting like children.”

“I honestly am sorry. I really had fun the other night and have zero regrets and very much want to go on a date with you. But my family is…toxic for the most part, and I don’t want to bring that into your family’s life.”

My laugh broke through, startling Finch. “I’m nowhere near ready to meet your family, Finch, and for all we know we could go on this date and it’ll be a flop. But I want to try and if it ever comes to the point that I have to meet them, we’ll deal with it. It’s you I want to take out to dinner, not them.”

It was a relief when he smiled, like the sun broke through the concrete and lit up the room.

“Fair enough. I am free tomorrow if you are.”

I hadn’t made any plans because I didn’t know his schedule, but there wasn’t a chance I was going to pass this up.

“Perfect. If you text me your address, I’ll pick you up at six tomorrow night.”

He slipped his phone from his pocket and sent it to me right then and there.

“It’s a date.”

After I got Milo home he was still a little out of it, so he plopped himself in front of the TV to watch cartoons, but mostly he dozed. I’d texted Tru, letting her know we were home so she knew Paula could drop her off after school.

Once all of that was done, I began arranging tomorrow night’s date with Finch. I planned on talking to Tru and Milo during dinner and letting them know.

They were open-minded, but I needed to know not only if they were okay with the fact that I was obviously not as straight as I’d thought but also if they were okay with me dating at all.

I made reservations at a very fancy place I’d never been to but had always wanted to go, and I’d see where the evening took us after that.

By the time I had dinner on the table, Milo was more alert and Tru was rambling about a school dance coming up and asking if I could take her to the mall for a dress.

“I wanted to talk to the two of you about something, and yes, Tru, we can go to the mall for your dress.”

“Thanks. So what’s up, Dad?”

“I love you both more than anything in the whole world. You know that, right?”

“Oh my God, are you dying?” Milo’s eyes widened.

“What? No!”

“Then why would you begin a conversation that way?” Tru huffed, and I realized this wasn’t going well.
