Page 42 of Hurt Me Not

I was stationed at the ER and for the first couple of hours, I went where I was called. Nothing serious: one person required stitches, another had fainted and was now with a neurologist.

So I was standing by the nurses station and Peggy, one of the nurses, said Dr. Bay was wondering if I could come up to the infusion room on the seventh floor, and of course I agreed. A kid needed me, and I was going to be there for them.

I waved at Rita as I passed through the pediatric hematology and oncology desk toward the infusion room.

Three nurses were at the station in the room, filling out charts.

“Hey, so the boy in curtain five is getting an IVIG, wanted you to put the IV in.” She handed me a tablet, and I didn’t need to look to know which boy had requested me.

Part of me was sad that he needed an IVIG so soon after the other one, and the other was nervous to go in there. I’d have to face Easton.

“Oh, yeah, sure. Thanks.”

Milo Kooper. Yep, of course.

Instead of going over there, pulling back the curtain, and smiling. I went and got everything I’d need. If I was active and doing something, I wouldn’t have to peer into Easton’s gorgeous green eyes and see all the things he must be thinking about me.

Everything in hand, I walked over to the curtain and pushed it aside. I could do this.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Easton

The curtain pulled away, and there he was. I scanned his body, searching for something that might be wrong with him, that might explain why he’d never returned any of my messages.

Aside from his nervous expression, he appeared as beautiful as ever and unharmed.

“Finch!” Milo excitedly called out, and Finch smiled.

“Hey, Milo. I hear I was requested.”

“You never let it hurt.”

Finch was moving all over the place, getting things ready, and he’d yet to meet my gaze.

“I did promise you’d never hurt on my watch.”

Milo nodded. “You did! Can you do the IV thing for me?”

“Of course.” When there was a beat of silence, he looked at me. “Hi, Easton. Sorry I haven’t texted you back, I’ll explain after I get Milo hooked up to the goods.”

“You don’t owe me an explanation.” That would be my brain talking; my heart was feeling a little bruised.

“I think I do.” He focused on Milo, and not once did Milo say ouch or cry or anything.

Finch truly was magic.

Half an hour later, Milo was starting to doze. Bags and bottles hung from his IV stand, and I begged them to work this time. To give Milo a forever boost, and sure it was probably dumb to hope he’d suddenly get better and they’d come in and tell me they made some sort of a mistake.

I was going to beg those bottles and bags to make it all better anyway.

I was so engrossed in watching my sleeping son, I didn’t hear Finch return until he tapped my shoulder.

“Hey, if you got a minute, I’d like to talk to you, if that’s all right?”

“I don’t want to go far in case he wakes up.”

He motioned to a small room across the way. “We can go there, and you can see Milo from that room.”
