Damn…What were these thoughts I was having about a man…about Finch?

I put everything back the way it was and leaned against the pillow of the couch, staring at the ceiling.

Why was he so intriguing? And why was the thought of him giving something to Milo to remember him by when he was gone bothering me so much? I didn’t want Finch gone, maybe ever.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Finch

Milo was scared but not in pain, so I couldn’t really do much for him in the procedure room besides hold his hand. The doctors and nurses were moving all over the place, and I was in the chair beside him. He was lying on his side so they could get to where they needed to do the biopsy.

“Are they gonna stab me?” His eyes teared up, and I wanted desperately to hug him but couldn’t.

“They are just getting prepared; they won’t do anything until you’re in a nice twilight sleep.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

He released a breath, and it was a heady feeling knowing your words held the power to calm someone.

“Hi, Milo.” Dr. Perry came around to be face-to-face. “How are you doing?”

“I want my dad.” Milo’s voice was just above a whisper, and when I glanced over at Dr. Perry she held that strong, determined, but sweet expression.

“I know you do, so let’s make that happen fast.” She motioned to her left. “You know Dr. Barnett. He’s going to help you take a nice nap and by the time you wake up, you’ll be with your dad.”

Milo faced me, and I mustered a brave expression. “Yep and while you sleep, I’ll keep watch over you, my brave prince.”

He squeezed my hand so tightly, had I been human I was sure I’d have winced.

“Okay, Finch…I…I trust you.”

I’d truly never understood what it meant when humans said something warmed their heart. It had always seemed ridiculous to me. I mean, your heart was already warm inside your chest. But now, in this moment, with Milo telling me he trusted me, I understood. It was like you were cold all the time and just never realized it until someone came along and thawed you out.

“And I’ll cherish that trust forever.”

I never let go of his hand, much to Dr. Barnett’s dismay. His aggravation was apparent with every huff, but all I had to do was glare at him, and he’d divert his gaze.

I didn’t pull the darkness that lay dormant within me ever, but I got the feeling that when he met my gaze, he felt it. Perhaps it was something unavoidable.

I shook off that thought and focused on Milo.

“Count as high as you can, Milo,” Dr. Barnett said, and he began.

“One, two, three…” He got all the way to twenty-two before his eyes drooped and he was asleep.

The moment they were done, I shot a text off to Easton while Milo was still sedated to let him know they had just finished and that he got through it like a champ.

It took about half an hour for Milo to wake and shake away the cobwebs.

“Ready to go see Dad?” I asked as soon as he was deemed fit to head to his room.

His smile was sleepy, but there was a spark in his eyes. He was numb from the local anesthetic, but I was keeping a close eye on him. At the smallest sign that he was in any pain, I was going to take it away.

I’d warned Easton that we were on our way, and we arrived to him beaming and rushing over to Milo.

“Hey, Buddy.”
