“Dad?”

“Yeah…” I coughed. “I had a dream last night about Mom…Finch was there too.”

“No way…what was it about?”

“She was in the kitchen baking, laughing. I couldn’t get to her, but there was a touch on my back. I turned and Finch was there…he had wings too, shiny…told her she didn’t have to worry about anything.”

“Whoa.”

Whoa indeed. How was this possible?

Milo leaned closer to me, and I met him halfway. “Do you think Mommy sent Finch to us?”

I wasn’t sure how to answer that. “Anything’s possible, right?”

He nodded and before we could talk more, the door opened and Dr. Barnett waltzed in with an eye-rolling Finch.

“We really do need to get this show on the road.”

“I’m ready.” Milo smiled.

Finch moved to the other side of Milo’s bed and took his hand. “Don’t worry, Easton. I’ll take good care of him.”

Milo and I gasped at the same time, and Finch furrowed his brows.

“You boys okay?”

“Yep,” we said in unison.

“Great…oh!” Finch shook his head. “I wanted to inform you—Dr. Perry was in a little bit ago, had to go to another patient but asked me to tell you. Milo’s counts were sixty thousand, and that’s high enough for this procedure.”

“Will they stay up that high?”

Finch shrugged. “That’s up to Milo’s body. But I wanted you to know.”

“Thanks. I should’ve asked, but I got here and saw Milo and forgot.”

“Not to worry.”

I hugged Milo again and moved toward the couch in his room. They’d told me I could stay here and he’d be rolled in after the biopsy was done.

My mind started to wander…memories of Laura with the kids, dancing with me in the kitchen whenever “She” by Elvis Costello played. I closed my eyes and dug deep in my mind to remember the sound of her laughter. In my dream it was clear as day; I swore I could even smell her floral perfume. Despair almost overtook me because I couldn’t move closer, but it disappeared as soon as I felt Finch.

What did it mean that Milo had dreamed of Laura and Finch the same night I had? Was Tru having dreams also? I wasn’t sure how I’d bring that up.

The room felt barren without Milo or Finch in here. I paced the entirety of the space. Texted Tru, who said she was watching a movie but to call when Milo was out.

A large bag beside the couch caught my attention. I peeked inside and saw a blanket…crocheted or knitted, I wasn’t sure. I didn’t want to risk unraveling it, but judging by what I could see it was Spiderman. A piece of paper rested on the side and I opened it.

To Milo: You’re so brave, just like Spiderman. I hope every time this keeps you warm, you think of me.

Signed by Finch.

Finch was making this for Milo?

I didn’t know what possessed me, but I leaned down and sniffed the blanket like a weirdo.

It was like breathing in a valley of flowers. Not floral like Laura’s perfume but fresh air, a hint of sweet petals, like the perfect spring day.
