Page 28 of Hurt Me Not

“Hi, Dad.” A tear slipped down his cheek, and I knew it wasn’t pain but relief. Easton was Milo’s protector. His person. And if you’re feeling scared, hurt, and lonely, when they are close, all the tightly wound strings that hold you together, snap.

“It’s okay, Bud, I’m here.” He gently hugged Milo and glanced at me.

“He did great, no issues. He just really needed his dad.”

I moved away to give them some time together since I knew in a minute or two, the doctors would be coming in to talk to Easton about everything.

Milo was going to be hungry soon. He’d had to fast and usually within the first hour, patients begged for something to eat. I picked up the menu and handed it to Easton.

“Oh, yeah. Milo, how about food?”

Milo nodded and looked over the menu with his dad. Once they’d both decided and Dr. Perry came in, I left to go call in their meal demands.

“How’s he doing?” Daisy asked as she exited from another patient’s room across the hall.

I quickly slipped on a face mask…even though I couldn’t contract anything from humans or give them anything that ailed me, I played the part every time.

“Okay. He wanted his dad.”

She furrowed her brows and followed me over to the computer, where I typed in their food order.

“I heard there was a bit of a commotion last night?”

For a moment I didn’t know what she was talking about; then I realized someone had obviously seen Vesper and Amaris.

“Nothing big.” I shrugged and played it off.

“Nothing? That’s not what I heard. Analise from radiology said she was walking by the ward and saw through the glass doors what looked like three very angry people.”

“Analise is nosy and clearly doesn’t know what she saw.”

She leaned her hip against the station. “So there weren’t three people arguing?”

“If you must know, my brother and sister stopped by. I’m a little estranged with my father, and they wanted to talk to me.”

“Do they not know how phones work?”

I cocked my head to the side and examined what I could make out of Daisy’s face. “I wouldn’t answer if they called…Daisy, what’s with the sudden interest in my life? We barely know each other. Nothing happened, we spoke, they left.”

“I get concerned when there are issues on a floor with children who are quite sick, Finch.”

Something wasn’t right. I narrowed my gaze and inched closer to her. “What’s going on?”

“I was just asking you the same thing.”

“That’s not what I meant, and you know it. I’ve never seen you at this hospital until recently, and out of the blue you’re all up in my business and…” I clenched my jaw. “The Koopers.” I took a deep breath. “Who sent you?” I sniffed but couldn’t get a fae scent off her.

“Sent me?” She snorted. “You think the board forced me to come talk to you?”

“What are you?”

“What am I? Finch, you’re acting really freaking weird.” She rolled her eyes and was about to turn when I grabbed her arm.

“You’re enchanted…that’s why I can’t smell you.”

Her eyes widened so fast that if I hadn’t been staring at her, I’d have missed it.

“You’re crazy, Finch.”
