Vesper’s eyes darkened. “He did what? It’s one thing to nudge a reminder, another entirely to harm a fae undeserving of it.”

“Oh please, Finch is such a suck-ass. Go and report him to the court.” She chuckled. “I believe the head of that court is on our side.”

“There are two courts and you know it, Amaris,” Vesper snapped. “Stop speaking as if your side is the all-powerful.”

“My family would kick your family’s ass.” She moved closer and poked Vesper in the chest. I needed to defuse this before someone saw us.

“Enough.” I stepped in the middle. “Vesper, thank Mother for me, give her my love, and tell her I’m okay. Amaris, just go away. You’ll tell Father whatever you want to anyway.”

She lifted one shoulder. “True. Okay, I came, I saw, I made your night unpleasant. Now I’ll fuck off.” I watched as she left through the sliding glass doors and sauntered down the corridor, and then faced Vesper.

“Is Mother all right?”

“She’s fine, never alone. Father doesn’t bother her. As powerful as he is, she is the queen after all; her power is mighty, Finch.”

What Mother had ever seen in my father I’d never know, but she’d once said to me that he used to be charming. Later he’d unveiled his true nature, and she’d been devastated. He was far too powerful to try and cast out of the fae realm. He was the king of the dark fae and she was the queen of the light. Opposites in everything but strength.

“I worry that Father will strike against her and the light fae.”

Vesper squeezed my arm. “And if he did, she’d war and the dark fae would discover that just because we believe in kindness doesn’t mean we won’t strike one of our own down without blinking.”

“Thank you for coming, Vesper. I have to get back into the room. I have a handle on things here; please don’t worry.”

He sighed. “I know you do, Finch. Mom was worried, so of course I had to do something.”

“She doesn’t have to watch after me—I’m safe.”

Vesper chuckled lightly. “Mother is always watching out for you, Finch. She loves you no matter where you choose to live.”

“Thank you, I’m gonna go.”

“Stay safe, Brother.”

He spun and left the ward.

Morning came with no more fanfare and when Milo blinked his eyes open, I had half my blanket done.

“Wow, that’s awesome.” He sat up and stared at my creation.

“You like it?” It was very intricate. I was making a spiderman blanket; it was him flying from one building to another—very hard to do.

“It’s so good!”

“Then when I’m done, it’s yours.” I hadn’t known who it would be for originally, but as the night pressed on I’d known in my heart this was going to be Milo’s if he liked it.

“For real?”

“The realiest.”

He laughed and glanced at his arm. “I slept through it all?”

“Yep, and the nurse will be coming in very soon to take your blood.”

Milo’s gaze went distant, and it was obvious he was beginning to get inside his head.

“How about we get cleaned up? I’ll grab the toothbrush, and we will do our thing.”

He nodded. Not the exuberant happiness I was going for, but sometimes you couldn’t push and you had to let a person go through the feels.
