“Can I have breakfast?” Milo asked when I brought over stuff for him to wash up.

“We’re going to hold off because they want you to fast, which means no eating or drinking. It’ll be easier on you to have an empty belly for the procedure.”

He didn’t say anything, simply went about washing his face and hands. Afterward he stood and, like a pro, walked over to the bathroom with the IV pole.

“Good morning.” A smiling Daisy bounced into the room.

“When did you get in?”

“A few minutes ago—where’s the prince?”

“Bathroom.” I motioned toward the door. “He hasn’t eaten or drank anything.”

“Great! I’ll let the doctors know immediately. If he’s ready and they’ve got a room booked, we can get this over with, and the little guy can stop fretting over it.”

I cocked my head to the side as she straightened up the bed for Milo.

“Fret?” I folded my arms over my chest.

“You know, worry…what?”

I was about to answer her, but Milo strolled in.

“I’m just here for blood.” She held up the tubes.

He’d had his blood taken enough that he understood it wouldn’t hurt, so when I stepped outside to call Easton, I felt okay.

“Hello.” His voice was sleepy and rough, and damn did it make my belly tingle.

“Morning, Easton.”

“Finch! What’s wrong?”

I chuckled. “Nothing, they are taking his blood right now. Things could start moving quickly after that. You have about thirty minutes before counts are in, and he’s fasting so if they can get him in soon they will.”

“I’ll be there soon, don’t let them take him until I get there.”

“You have my word.”

I wondered if Easton understood how binding a fae’s word was…No matter, I’d make sure Milo stayed in his room and we’d wait for his father.

“Thank you so much.”

He disconnected and I returned to Milo’s room.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Easton

Milo was pretty pale by the time I got to his hospital room. Finch was talking to him about flowers and distracting him while a doctor and nurse spoke.

“Hey, Buddy.”

“Dad!” He opened his arms, and I rushed over and hugged him. He was shaking slightly but as I wrapped him up in my embrace, he began to settle.

“Is this the father?” A doctor I hadn’t recognized appeared in my periphery.

“Yes, this is Easton Kooper, Milo’s father,” Finch answered, I suspected to allow Milo and me time to hug.
