Tru rushed over and kissed his forehead and was out the door in a heartbeat.

“This is hard on her.” I was watching the door she’d rushed through.

“Not just her.”

I faced Finch, whose brow was slightly quirked.

“Allow yourself to feel too, Easton. When she’s in bed, go take a shower, and let it out. You’re no good to them if you have a nervous breakdown.”

I released a sigh and nodded. “I’ll try. Really, thank you for being here. I’m not sure what I’d do if you weren’t.”

“Like I said, I’m here until you don’t want me to be.”

I wanted him to never leave, and that was a surprising thought.

“Any time of night, call.”

Finch mock-saluted. “Yes, sir.”

I rolled my eyes and went to find my daughter.

CHAPTER TEN

Finch

The first few hours Easton was gone were uneventful. Milo slept, showing no reaction to the IVIG or platelets. I’d brought my crochet kit, and I was softly humming a song my mother used to sing to put us to sleep while crocheting a blanket (I had no idea for whom) when raised voices outside Milo’s door caught my attention.

I paused, closed my eyes, and breathed in deeply. The stench of damp earth and the aroma of crisp snow battled for my attention.

“No,” I breathed out.

As quickly and quietly as I could, I placed my project on the cushion beside me and rushed toward the door. When I opened it, I found exactly what I’d thought I would.

“Seriously?” I whispered loudly. “Twice in one day?”

My brother Vesper smiled broadly at me while my sister Amaris scowled.

“Brother!” Vesper’s arms opened, and I was engulfed in a hug so comforting, by the time he released me I wasn’t angry anymore.

“Hello, Vesper. Always nice to see you.” I peered around his large form to where Amaris was picking her teeth with a piece of bark, shrouding the hallway with her hate.

Vesper and I shared a mother and he was also born of another light fae, making him inherently good. Amaris was the twin sister of Arachnis, both born to dark fae.

They had their glamours up, but I could see their true nature. Vesper was stunning with his bright-white hair tumbling in waves along his back and ice-blue eyes. Amaris’s hair was onyx and her eyes matched. Happiness and gloom in its truest forms.

“I was sent here.” Amaris stuck her tongue out at Vesper.

“As was I.” He wasn’t petty and didn’t return the gesture.

“Why? Arachnis threatened me earlier. I get it—you felt a wave. Oooooh, okay, sorry I cared about a child.” I rolled my eyes, desperately hoping I was pulling it off. Truth was, I was getting closer to the Koopers and if I didn’t break away soon, there’d be serious issues.

“Yeah, well, you’re sending off tsunami-sized waves, Finny.” Amaris smirked, knowing I hated that nickname.

“I care; it’s why I’m in this realm.” I scanned the area quickly, happy to see no nurses or doctors in sight. They were all probably in with patients.

“I’m here because Mother is concerned.” Vesper eyed Amaris. “Your father is getting even more volatile.”

“Explains why Arachnis showed up at my home and slammed me up against my door, threatening me basically not to feel.”
