“I appreciate it.”

“I won’t leave Milo’s side until you get here, so don’t rush in the morning.”

“I can’t ask that of you.”

Finch’s light laughter was like music. “You didn’t, Easton. Go get some sleep. You’ll have your answer waiting for you when you wake.”

“Okay. Good night, Finch.”

In bed that night, to my surprise, my mind was wrapped up in Finch. When I closed my eyes, my dreams were filled with him too.

CHAPTER SIX

Finch

The night was uneventful. Milo slept peacefully—no pain, no fear. I hoped after I left today he’d be okay and he’d continue to experience no pain.

Our night was the type of fun I’d never had as a little fae. When I’d been with my mother, she’d enthralled me with her magic. It was beautiful, free, and blooming. She was able to bring anything on the brink of death back to life. She favored nature because she said the trees and flowers didn’t ask for anything and shouldn’t be punished for others’ actions.

Anytime I’d been forced to be with my father was bleak, terrifying, lonely, and devastating. His magic was one I spent great lengths not to witness. He was a master of death. He could make anything in nature kill anything living. It was ugly and not at all something I wanted in my life.

Video games? Never played them before arriving to the human realm and never had more fun with them until I played with Milo.

Milo began to stir at six in the morning, and I smiled as soon as he turned his head and saw me.

“Morning, big guy.”

“Good morning.” His voice was a rough, so I handed him a cup of ice water.

“How about I get you some breakfast? Are you hungry?”

“Sure.”

I slid the menu to him. “By the time it arrives, I bet you’ll be starving.”

He was adorably rumpled, and I couldn’t help the grin on my face when he scratched his head, making his bed-head hair stick straight up.

“Can I have waffles?”

“You’re not on any restrictions, so absolutely.”

Once I ordered the food, I helped him get cleaned up. Easton told Milo he’d bring him a bag of his things when he came by this morning, but we had spare toothbrushes, toothpaste, and body wash. A full shower would have to wait, but just wiping your skin made a world of difference.

Food arrived, and Milo dug in. I glanced at the clock and I saw it was seven.

“Milo, I’ll be right back, okay?” I slipped my mask on.

He nodded, a little syrup dripping from his chin.

“Heading out?” one of the morning shift nurses asked. I wasn’t familiar with her.

“I have to sign out, but I’m going to stay with him until his dad arrives.”

“No problem.” She tilted her head. “I’m Daisy, by the way. I don’t think we’ve met.”

“Hi, Daisy, I’m Finch, and no we haven’t.”

Since I could only see her eyes above the mask, I saw them twinkle and I immediately got a good feeling about her.
