“I promised Finch I’d stay here with you and your children for as long as I was able.” Calantha beamed at both kids, who returned the sentiment. “And it’s been a pleasure. You have outstanding children.”

“I think they’re pretty cool.” I ruffled Milo’s hair.

“I remember Finch was all dark, and then he wasn’t. He said he would be lost to it if he ever chose to release that side of himself.”

Calantha hummed. “My son’s heart is far too big and too good for the darkness to ever truly latch on. His fears were implanted by Manchineel. Your love for him and his for you and the kids—that is a magic no evil could compete with.”

She beamed and I mirrored it, relieved to hear he was wrong about his fear.

“Your wife, Laura, I’m told she passed away a few years ago?” Calantha moved to the bay window in my bedroom and pulled the curtain back. It was dusk, so not night completely.

“Yes.”

“Fae believe that when we die, we go into the ground to be reborn. Much like Willow, the dreamer. He died and was buried to be reborn through you and Milo.”

“Yeah, Dad, how cool is that? Our dreams are magic. Daisy said they found out it was true.”

“Nice, Buddy.”

“I’m not a dreamer.” Tru sighed.

“No, you’re not.” Calantha moved over to her. “I think your mother lives through you, though. Her strength, it’s here.” She motioned to Tru’s heart. “I can feel her.”

Tru’s eyes widened. “Really?”

“I promise. Those who leave the realms leave pieces of themselves behind. Humans are a little different from fae, but in this I’m certain. Your mother’s light beats within your heart.”

“And fae can’t break promises, Dad.” Milo was frantically nodding.

“So I’ve heard, Buddy.” I wasn’t sure if what Calantha was saying was to make Tru feel better but after what I’d seen, anything was possible.

Not long after, I began to feel tired. Amazing. After five days of rest, I was able to sleep even more.

Daisy said she’d get me some food, but I was out cold the second they all left my room.

I didn’t know how long I was out, but I woke to lips pressed to mine.

I opened my eyes to a sweet, smiling Finch.

“You’re here…wait, are you here or is this a dream?”

He chuckled. “I’m here.”

“Are you okay?”

He took my hands in his and lifted them to his mouth.

“I am now.”

EPILOGUE

Finch

Five Years Later

“I can’t believe she’s graduating high school.” Easton was staring at the football field, a bouquet of flowers on his lap.

It was currently devoid of people, but at any minute the graduates would take to the field, receive their diplomas, and Tru Kooper would be a high school graduate.
