Snorting, I said, “I’m not sure you started this one.”

She grinned. “Darn well finished it, though.”

I tried to peer around her but couldn’t move with two children clinging to me.

“Is Finch here?”

She shared a glance with Daisy before answering me. “He is not.”

“You’ve been asleep for a while, Easton. Queen Calantha’s magic saved you, but the strain on your body forced the magic to work harder.”

“How long was I out for, and why isn’t Finch here?”

“You’ve been out for five days,” Tru answered as she sat up and moved to the edge of the bed.

“Five days?”

Milo sat crisscross applesauce beside me. “Finch was here for a little bit, but then some people came for him.”

“What?” I referred to Calantha and Daisy. “Who?”

Calantha moved closer and tenderly ran her fingers through Tru’s hair, smiling at her. It was such a motherly thing to do.

“We knew this was a possibility. Manchineel accused Finch of breaking laws. It’s a desperate attempt, one more way to hurt his son.”

“How long has he been there?”

“Four days.” Daisy picked up her book and placed it on the table.

“What’s it all mean? What’ll happen?”

“The courts are made up of two factions. Light and Dark. My court is arguing on behalf of Finch’s actions. Technically, Arachnis was the one to start the law-breaking, which both courts did agree on, and he’s been stripped and imprisoned.”

“Stripped?” I furrowed my brow and Daisy quickly shook her head. Obviously it was unpleasant, and she didn’t want the kids to hear.

“If he started it, everything else Finch did had to be in defense, right?” It made sense to me.

“And that’s what the argument is. But the Dark Court won’t be so agreeable, because anything that works in the favor of the Light Court upsets them.”

I scoffed. “Your government’s no better than ours.”

Calantha chuckled. “No, seems like it’s not.”

“How’s it looking for Finch?”

“He’s not being held in a prison. He is able to stay at my home while things proceed.”

Swallowing, I needed a minute before I asked.

“What if he’s found guilty?”

“We don’t have answers for that.” Daisy grimaced. “I think it’s coming down to, if they let Finch go, they may need to let Manchineel go as well.”

“That’s a steep price.” I bit my bottom lip, not liking any of this.

“Amaris was released but ordered to stay in the fae realm for fifty years.”

“I guess I don’t have to worry about her for a while.”
