“You’re awake,” I said, standing too quickly and knocking the chair over behind me. The loud clatter caused him to wince with pain, and his eyes closed again.

I grabbed the chair, then went to his side, frantic. “Patrick, please open your eyes, baby. I need to see those eyes.”

The noise alerted Natalie, who came in. “That was the chair. But he opened his eyes and grunted.”

“That’s good. I’ll message the doctors.”

I rubbed his stubbled face and continued to try to get him to open them again. “Patrick, please don’t go back to sleep. Please.”

I was on the verge of losing my shit when he turned his head toward the sound of my voice and looked at me with a confused expression.

“So tired,” he whispered, blinking slowly at me.

I nodded rapidly. “I know. You scared me.”

“Water. Everything hurts.”

I ran my fingers through his hair. “I bet.”

His brows knitted, so I ran my thumb over the frown lines on his forehead. The longer he stared at me, the more confused he looked.

“I’m so happy you’re awake.”

“What… happened?”

“I’ll tell you later.”

I gently rubbed the spot between his eyes as he blinked slowly at me. He seemed to accept that and continued to stare at me. And I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

“I’m here with you.”

The slightest nod gave me so much comfort.

Dr. Navarro came back into the room and walked up to the other side of the bed. “Patrick, how are you feeling?” He smiled down at him.

“Terrible, obviously.”

The doctor chuckled and nodded. “That’s to be expected with what you’ve been through.”

“Can you make it stop?”

I smiled. This Patrick was a little bolder than the old one.

“I can, but I need to ask you a few questions first.”

He nodded, but closed his eyes.

“Can you tell me your last name?”

Patrick sighed out heavily. “Griffin.”

“Good. Can you tell me what year it is?”

Patrick raised one eyelid and frowned. “Don’t you know? What kind of place is this?”

I laughed in relief. Patrick wasn’t like this when he first met someone. He was always kind and polite. Almost shy.

“Yes,” the doctor chuckled, “but do you know?” Dr. Navarro folded his arms over his chest, then looked down at him as if he were amused, too.
