Chapter 20

Daniel and Fiona headed back to El Saad two days after he had asked to marry her. Fiona was nervous about telling his mother. She already knew that his mother didn’t like her and it worried her. Daniel was not that worried. He was determined to marry Fiona no matter what. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him. Anyone with eyes could see that.

Daniel went to see his father as soon as he arrived at the palace. He still had to use a walking aid and couldn’t walk fast but it was a great improvement. It was much better than being in a wheelchair.

When Daniel arrived at the king’s quarters, he found his parents and his grandmother sitting in the living room. His mother gasped and sprang up to her feet as soon as she saw him. “My son!” she cried out and rushed to embrace him. Daniel smiled.

“Hello, Mother,” he greeted her. She immediately burst into tears.

“You are finally walking,” she said. Lady Agaiby also hugged Daniel and kissed him on both cheeks. The king held Daniel by his shoulders and smiled.

“I am so happy to see you back on your feet,” he said. They all sat down at the sofas. Daniel was happy to be back in his country.

“It’s good to be back,” he said.

“Now that you are back, I have something to tell you,” said the king.

“What is it?”

“We found out who was behind your accident.”

Daniel raised his eyebrows. “Who?” he asked.

“Sheikh Suliman.”

“What? No.” He was in disbelief. Surely it couldn’t be Sheikh Suliman. He was one of the closest people to his father. “Why would he do that?” Daniel asked.

“Apparently, many years ago, you were involved with his daughter and things did not end well between the two of you.”

Daniel frowned. He couldn’t even remember who his daughter was. He had only known the sheikh and his wife but never paid attention to his family.

“I was?” he asked.

“Her name is Maria,” said the king. It took Daniel a few moments before he remembered her. They were together briefly. He didn’t want a relationship but she did. She was so in love with Daniel and wanted to marry him.

“That is still no reason to make an attempt on my life,” said Daniel.

“I agree and that is why he has been arrested. He will be stripped of his title and his lands will be confiscated,” said the king.

“When did you find out it was him?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“How come I was not informed?”

“We just wanted you to concentrate on recovering. Finding out about this could have caused a major setback in your recovery.”

Daniel sighed and shook his head. He would have never expected it to be Sheikh Suliman, of all people. He wasn’t even angry about it anymore because if the accident had never happened, he would have never met Fiona.

“Where is your caregiver?” the king asked him. “I must reward her for everything that she has done for you.”

“She has gone to her quarters. I wanted to talk to you about her actually.”

“What about her?” his mother asked. Daniel took a deep breath before he spoke.

“I asked her to marry me,” he said.

“What?” his parents and grandmother spat out at the same time.
