Chapter 6

Daniel watched Fiona walk out of his room. He was so frustrated. It was the second day and she still looked as though she was not ready to quit. Daniel was going to weaken her resolve no matter what. She had touched him twice. That was infuriating to him. He did not like people touching him.

He took the grey T-shirt that she had picked out for him and slipped it over his head. Putting on a T-shirt was easy. Putting on a pair of trousers or shorts was not so easy. He had to lift one leg and put it into one side of the trousers, then do the same for the other side. Then he had to wiggle from side to side while pulling up his trousers. It took him a while and the worst part was the pain. His back hurt a lot on most days.

Daniel’s life had drastically changed since the accident. Three months ago, he had been at the speedway racing like he normally did on Saturdays. The weather was perfect and there had been a great turnout. So many people had come to see him race. His car was in first place and the crowd was roaring loudly. Everyone was on their feet chanting his name. He crossed the finish line but could not stop the car. He hit the brakes but his car did not slow down. He kept accelerating and crashed.

“Your highness!” Fiona called out as she knocked on the door, interrupting his thoughts.

“What?” Daniel replied.

“The doctor has arrived.”

“Well then bring him in,” Daniel snapped. Fiona slowly opened the door and cautiously poked her head into the room. “What is wrong with you?” he asked.

“I was just making sure that you were dressed.” She cleared her throat and opened the door wider. She walked into his bedroom with Dr. Sadiq. Dr. Sadiq was one of the royal doctors. Daniel’s family had a team of highly qualified doctors that looked after their health.

“Good morning, your highness.” Dr. Sadiq bowed his head to Daniel. “How are you feeling today?”

“Like I don’t have the use of my legs.” Daniel replied.

Dr. Sadiq cleared his throat and shifted awkwardly. “Do you feel any pain or discomfort?” he asked.

“What do you think?”

Fiona’s eyes widened as she shifted awkwardly. Dr. Sadiq clung to his leather bag tightly. He looked nervous and uncomfortable. Daniel was annoyed. He always felt annoyed and angry after getting dressed. He hated that something that used to be so simple had now become a challenge. A painful and uncomfortable time-consuming challenge. Fiona cleared her throat and looked at the doctor.

“What kind of check-up do you need to do with the prince today?” Fiona asked him gently.

“I just need to check if there has been any change in his situation, just simple tests that we can do here without having to go to the hospital.”

“Okay. What do you need to do exactly?”

Daniel crossed his eyebrows. He wondered why Fiona was getting involved. She was only his temporary maid and not his mother or grandmother. She needed to stay quiet. In fact, she needed to be out of the room.

“I have some equipment to check the sensation in his legs,” said Dr. Sadiq.

“I have no feeling in my legs,” Daniel said.

“Can the doctor just do his job?” Fiona asked Daniel in a very gentle tone. “I am sure it will not take that long.” She looked at Dr. Sadiq for confirmation.

“It won’t take long,” said the doctor with a few nods. Daniel stared at Fiona with a narrowed gaze.

“Let’s start then, quickly,” she said to Dr. Sadiq. The doctor nodded and put his bag down on the floor. He crouched down and opened it.

“Do you think that you are in the right position to give anyone consent to my body?” Daniel asked Fiona.

“No, I am not,” she replied.

“Then why are you doing it?”

“This is for your own good. The doctor is only looking after your health. I am here to make things easier or run smoother for you.”

“You are actually making things more uncomfortable for me.”

Fiona looked at him with her eyebrows raised. She looked as though she did not believe him. Dr. Sadiq was just holding a small plastic rod with a needle on the end, looking awkward. He did not know what to do.

“What is that? What are you going to do with that?” Fiona asked Dr. Sadiq.
