“Beings love your ass.” Talley bumped against her.

“They thought they were just grabbing my cloak.” Kesser joked. “They didn’t realize it was all ass underneath it.”

The two of them giggled as they approached the gates. They showed the guards their invitations. The guards stepped aside and opened the gates.

Kesser walked arm in arm with Talley through the flower-covered yard.

“I’m going to boink my hunky male against that wall,” Talley whispered.

Fates. Her friend treaded on dangerous ground.

“Don’t let anyone see you.” Kesser hoped the no-one-sees-or-hears-anything policy during The Guidance held true for them this planet rotation.

“They won’t see my face.” Talley’s voice lilted with humor.

Kesser sucked back a tart reply as they entered the structure.

The place was as crowded as the pathways outside the walls were. Beings in hooded cloaks held containers of sparkling beverages. Music played. Some beings danced. There was chatter and laughter and…life.

A smile lifted Kesser’s lips. She might be on duty, but she could still enjoy the fun ambiance.

She and Talley circled the chamber, greeting beings with silent nods. They pretended not to recognize any of the attendees. That was part of the festivities.

Some of the identities were obvious, however. A high-credit supporter of Kesser’s mom wore all her sunstones and other decorations on the outside of her cloak. An official’s cloak hood had slipped off his balding head. One of Talley’s previous admirers’ distinctive snort was heard to the left of them.

Kesser ensured the two of them were seen by as many beings as possible.

Satisfied she’d achieved that goal, she murmured to Talley, “Have fun.”

“Ohhh…I will.” Her friend hugged her and then disappeared into the mass of cloaked beings.

Kesser was now alone in the crowded chamber. She was tempted to claim a fermented beverage. Drinking it would give her something to do.

But she had to keep a clear head. Her friend’s happiness, both present and future, depended on that.

She also couldn’t risk anyone seeing her fingers. They were numerous shades darker than Talley’s. Any observer would immediately know she wasn’t her friend.

Instead, Kesser drifted aimlessly through the chamber. Conversations happened all around her. Beings laughed and flirted and consumed nourishment and beverages.

Everyone appeared to be having a great time.

Yearning pulled at her. She wanted to join one of the side groups.

That would require talking, however. And the beings would recognize her voice. Most of the attendees often interacted with her mom.

She moved through the space once, twice, three more times.

Then she slipped out of the chamber, out of the structure, out of the walled plot, and joined the more-boisterous crowd outside the gates.

She couldn’t chatter with those beings either. Talley’s dad’s guards might be amongst them. But it felt more…freeing.

Kesser leaned against a wall. She didn’t feel as though she was being observed.

The shadows partially hiding her accentuated that illusion. Keeping her head bowed, she extracted a handheld from the folds of her cloak and sent a short message to her mom, assuring her she was safe.

That was the truth. The presence of the guards at the gates stopped the celebrations from becoming too wild. And she could handle any additional ass grabbers.

Moments passed.
