No one would recognize her. And, if Talley’s dad sent guards to follow them, they wouldn’t realize the female in the black cloak with green trim wasn’t their target.

“We’ll enter together.” Kesser outlined the plan with Talley one more time. “Do the rounds.” Beings would see their cloaks and hear them chattering. If anyone asked, they would remember the two of them were there. “You’ll slip away and find Tsadok.” Her friend had arranged to meet the Powluk in the documents chamber. “I’ll mingle on my own.” Being the daughter of a leader, she was accustomed to socializing solo. “Then I’ll wait for you outside. Remember to leave after the go-the-fuck-home-now speech.”

That was what they jokingly called the end-of-the-event speech, the one hosts delivered, thanking everyone for attending.

“I won’t leave later than that.” Talley assured her alarmingly quickly.

That usually meant she had no intention of doing whatever she’d promised.

Kesser narrowed her eyes at her friend. “That’s when most beings will leave. We’ll be less trackable in the crowd.” She paused. “And don’t leave with Tsadok.”

The male would be cloaked, but with his height and size, he would be noticeable.

“I want to leave with him.” Talley admitted that truth. “I don’t know when I’ll see him again.” She sighed. “Every moment we can steal together is precious.”

“I know.” And Kesser did know.

Now.

A part of her had thought the meeting would be discarded. She believed her friend would shift her attention to another being. As she had done so often in the past.

But, if anything, Talley’s enthrallment with the Powluk had increased.

It seemed to truly be love for her friend. The long-lasting kind.

Kesser was happy for Talley.

She was also envious. “Exiting apart should make meeting with him easier in the future. And you want that, don’t you?”

“I want that. More than anything.” Talley reached out and squeezed her hand. “Thank you for this, for helping us.” She met Kesser’s gaze. “Tsadok told me he sent his guard back to Powlus Zetus on an errand.” Her friend’s eyes sparkled with merriment. “But he also says the male takes his role extremely seriously and might disobey that command. If you see a huge hunky hunk of a being hovering around the structure, that’s him. Tsadok’s guard is even larger than he is.”

Fates save her from a merger-arranging friend. Kesser pinched the bridge of her nose. “I’m not chattering with his guard. I’m supposed to be you, remember? And you can’t be linked to any Powluks publicly or your dad will become suspicious.”

“Then he’ll lock me in my private chambers forever. I know.” Talley rolled her eyes. “You can’t chatter with Tsadok’s guard.” She leaned toward Kesser and whispered, “Who is very powerful and credit-rich in his own right.” Her friend straightened. “But you can casually part your cloak, unfasten your flight suit and flash him some breast.”

“You’re impossible.” Kesser shook her head. She wasn’t showing her chest to a stranger.

“I am impossible, aren’t I?” Talley laughed.

Kesser laughed also. Fates, she loved her friend.

It would be lonely if or when Talley left the planet to be with her male.

Kesser pushed away her sorrow. They had now, and she would enjoy the fuck out of it.

Talley chattered about Tsadok, sharing too much information about the size of the male’s body parts. Kesser went over the plan one more time in detail as she listened to her friend.

They finally arrived at the event.

Kesser thanked the land-transport flyer. She and Talley pulled up the hoods of their cloaks, and they tumbled out of the vessel and into a crowd of beings.

Fermented beverage already flowed outside the walls of the domicile. Beings called out to them. Someone grabbed Kesser’s ass.

“Let go of me.” She elbowed that being. Hard.

“By the Fates.” The male cursed as he freed her.

The Fates were always portrayed as being female. Kesser doubted they would tolerate being roughly handled like she had been.
