“Pull over. I’ll drive.”

“I don’t want to stop.”

“Paige, you lost them. I think they went down with that bridge.”

“Did I kill them?” she whispers.

“It wasn’t a very high bridge and there was only a creek under it. I’m sure they’re fine.”

“I’m going to puke.”

“Paige, pull over,” I tell her calmly.

“I can’t. I don’t think I can let go of the steering wheel.”

I reach over and put my hand on hers. “You’re okay. You made it out of there. You are one hell of a driver.”

She shakes her head, blinking her eyes. “I’m okay. I’m good.”

I rub her hand. “Do you know where we are going?”

She turns onto a paved road and not long after we’re on the freeway. “I do,” she finally answers.

“You do know where we’re going?”

"My goal is Miami," she confesses, her voice barely above a whisper.

My eyes nearly pop out of my head at her revelation. Miami? That's halfway across the country, a world away from the quiet town we just left behind. “Miami? What’s there?”

“Nothing and no one I know,” she replies. “I can get lost in a new city. I want to start over with a new name and a new life.”

I get it. I understand. She's not just running away from something—she's running towards a new beginning.

“Exactly who is this would-be fiancé?” I ask her. “I’ve never known a man to be this relentless. There’s more to this story you’re not telling me.”

“Hunter, please, I can’t. Not right now. I need to think.”

“I got us some drinks but I’m not sure I want to open a Coke bottle right now.”

She giggles uncontrollably. “Definitely not.”

Chapter seven

Paige

My legs have not stopped shaking since I got in the car at the gas station. My fingers feel like they are going to snap but I can’t seem to let go of the steering wheel. I am in shock. I recognize it, but I can’t stop it. This was not what I expected when I made my escape.

“This is our exit,” I say with a yawn.

“Oklahoma City?”

Exhaustion weighs heavy on my shoulders. I want nothing more than a comfy bed and a hot meal, but I push the fatigue aside.

“Is this where we stop for the night?”

“No,” I shake my head. “I've made arrangements to drop off the car and pick up another rental.”

“And then what?”
