“What kind of deal, Zaph?”

He wraps his fingers around mine. “She’s not going to bother you anymore.”

“What did you have to promise her?” He continues to look down at our joined hands. “Zaph, answer me. What did you have to promise?”

He sighs, looking me in the eyes. “When you pass, I’ll go to her.”

“What does that mean?”

He looks between each eye. “It means between your lives, I’ll be with her.”

“Between my lives?” I pull my hand away. “You mean when you’re here, and I’m there?”

“Yes.”

“Are you out of your fucking mind?”

Zaph stands, swiping a hand through his hair. Magically, every hair falls back into place. “I had no choice, Lucy. She was going to kill you.”

“You always have a choice!” I repeat from our conversation days ago. “So, while I’m dead, you’ll be some sort of a personal assistant?” I use finger quotes.

He turns toward me. “I’ll be nothing more than a soldier, ready to do her bidding. That’s what we all are, soldiers. When you return, I’ll be your earth-bound guardian.”

I cross my arms in defiance. “What if I don’t want you in another life?”

He sighs. “It’s a chance I’m willing to take.” His words are soft. “I’m sorry, Lucy. I didn’t think there was another choice.”

“She didn’t seem willing to negotiate anything.”

He smiles a half smile. “I have a way with words.”

“I’m not a fan of any of this.”

Zaph moves back toward the bed, sitting on the edge. “There’s something else.” He pauses, looking down nervously. “I didn’t fall on my own accord. I was forced from heaven.”

“I know.”

He looks up with a puzzled look on his face. “How?”

“Lilith told me. What happened, Zaph?”

“There is only one rule, and I broke it.” He pauses, standing up. “I intervened where I shouldn’t have.”

“What do you mean, intervened?”

“As guardians, our job is to advise and protect, but never to change the timeline of what is supposed to be. I did.” He looks back at me. “I changed the course of your timeline.”

“What? How?”

“Do you remember the truck that ran the light and would’ve hit you?”

I think back to the almost accident that Zaph mentioned earlier. “Yes. We talked about that before.”

“You were supposed to die. The truck was supposed to hit your door, killing you on impact. When I prevented you from moving, you were safe and therefore survived.”

I stare at the angel, confused. “You were kicked out of heaven for doing your job? Protecting me?”

“It’s not that simple.” His eyes look sad. “Yes, I was doing my job, but my job was to follow your life plan. I didn’t.”
