“Are you saying my death was predestined?”

“They all are,” he answers.

“If we’re together between lives, why would you do that? Didn’t you want to be with me?” I’m more confused than before.

He stands, walking across the room. “More than anything, but you didn’t. You made me promise between lives to let you live to be an old woman. You wanted to experience loss, love, pain, and joy. Your life ending early wouldn’t allow that to happen.”

I move behind him, feeling the heat radiating off of him. “I’m sorry, Zaph. I never should have forced you to make a promise like that.”

Zaph turns quickly, nearly knocking me down. “Don’t apologize, Lucy.”

“How could I have been so incredibly selfish?”

A warm hand caresses my cheek. “Wanting to experience the fullness of this life is not selfish. It’s beautiful. You deserved to have all of those things and more.”

Tears stream silently down my cheeks. “You were thrown out of heaven because of me. I did this to you.”

“No. I could have chosen to ignore your request. It was my choice. You did nothing wrong. Neither did I, for that matter.” A weak smile covers his face. “I wouldn’t have been here with you now. I‘ve been given a gift. The gift of being human and experiencing human emotions. Human love. Human…feelings.” He lifts my face toward his. “I love you, Lucinda Williams. Between lives, I’ll be here, on earth, waiting for your return. But guarantee. When you return, I will find you. I will always find you. I’d recognize your soul in a sea of millions.”

I lift on my toes, gently placing my lips on his. Our kisses are gentle to start with, but quickly turn frantic and needy. “I love you, too.”

My words speed up the frenzy as his hands slide behind my back and down to my ass. He squeezes, bringing an embarrassingly loud sigh. He pulls away quickly. “Are you okay? Am I hurting you?”

I smile. “I’m better than I have been in a long time.” I grab his hand, pulling him toward the bed. Standing in front of my messy covers, I take charge. Pushing him onto the bed, he lands with a heavy thud.

“Lucy? Are you sure this is a good idea? You’re recovering from a load of trauma.”

I don’t answer. Instead, I rip the button-down shirt he’s wearing from his torso, flinging buttons everywhere. Exposing his rock-hard abs, I run my fingers over the muscles, taking my time to explore his warm skin underneath my fingertips. “You’re perfect,” I whisper, continuing to move my hands.

My thighs straddle his as the evidence of his erection hits me in all the right places. Reaching down, I unbuckle his belt, making my way to his jeans button. Instantly, my hands are touching him, running the length of him. He shudders with my movement.

I slowly slide the pants from his hips, pulling them past what I really want and toward his knees.

“It’s you that’s perfect,” Zaph says as he sits up, lifting me above his cock.

“No, we’re perfect together.”

Slowly, I lower myself onto him, allowing him to enter me. The sensation is almost more than I can handle. With precise movement, I begin to work my way up and down the length of him. Zaph grabs my hips, urging me to move faster. I follow his guidance and pick up speed, sliding from base to tip.

His tongue explores mine as he moves one hand to my ass and the other to my breast. Reaching behind me, I wrap my hand around his balls, gently massaging and matching tempo with my thrusts.

“Lucy,” Zaph whispers. With one last massage and downward slide, his breath catches in his throat, and he buries himself deep inside, holding me tight to him. Within seconds, we’re exploding together in ecstasy.

Tingles fill every pore on my body, making me want to cry, laugh, and cheer at the same time.

We sit, wrapped in each other’s arms, for what seems like hours. My stomach growls loudly, interrupting the moment. Zaph laughs under my hold. “Sounds like we need to get some food in you.”

“I want to stay like this forever.”

“Yeah, me too, but we have the rest of your life,” he answers.

I pull away at his choice of words. “The rest of my life?” Instead of answering, he leans down, kissing my forehead. “What happens when I’m old and gray, and you’re still the hot angel you are right now?”

“Lucy, I don’t love you for your body or your youth. I love your soul. That’s the real you. Your outward appearance is just a shell.”

“People are going to think I’m your grandmother.”

Zaph smiles at my words. “Let them think what they want. Your opinion is the only one that matters.”
