Shit. “No,” I repeat.

“Lilith doesn’t take no for an answer. Neither do I.” Zephriel’s hands are around my waist seconds later, and we’re lifted into the sky.

“Let me go, you giant asshole!”

“Your wish is my command,” Zephriel says, releasing his hold on me and sending me plummeting toward the ground below.

Everything that’s happened in my life until this moment flashes through my mind. Being dropped to the ground by an angel is not how I expected my life to end. The top of the SUV comes into view just as white wings wrap around me, lifting me back into the sky.

“Do you have any more wishes, my dear?” Zephriel asks, lifting me back into the sky just as everything goes black.

I awaken to my hands tied behind my back and a blindfold over my eyes. “Hello?” my voice echoes off of what sounds like concrete.

“You’re awake,” a woman’s voice echoes. “I was beginning to think Zephriel killed you.”

“Who are you?”

The woman laughs. “Who I am is of no concern.”

“What do you want with me?”

“I don’t want you. But it seems you are the only connection to the one I do want. Where’s Zaphriel?”

“Who?” I play dumb.

“Don’t be daft, young one. I smell him all over you. Where is he?”

“I don’t know,” I answer truthfully. “He was gone when I came out of the restroom.”

The sound of heels echo through the room. “Kill her,” she says. Her voice decrescendos as she moves away.

The rush of wind is the only sensation of movement toward me. Instinctively, I know an angel stands in front of me. “I feel you,” I whisper into the silence. “I can help you.” I don’t know what the hell I’m saying. I panic under pressure. I hear a soft huff, inches from my face.

“What makes you think I need your help?” a voice I don’t recognize asks. The voice is soft and feminine with a hint of an accent similar to Zaph’s.

“Because you don’t have to kill anyone. You have the ability to make your own choices.”

“I already made that choice. Now, my life belongs to her.”

“That’s not true. Your life is yours and yours alone.” I try to keep her talking.

She laughs. “You humans and your misconceptions.”

“Why did you fall?”

“Enough talk. Lilith will be back soon.”

Panic fills me. I’m not ready to die. Especially like this. “You had to have a reason to fall. Tell me about it.”

“Stop,” she demands. “I know what you’re doing, and I don’t play games.”

“Do you know Zaph?”

She’s quiet for a few minutes. “We knew each other before.”
