I wake up from the best night of sleep ever, and my head on an extremely hard pillow. Pulling my face away, I wipe the wetness from my cheek. My eyes open to black hair and the memory of who’s in bed next to me.

Oh, my God. I’m lying on top of Zaph. Not just my head, but my leg has betrayed me too. I’m using him as a full-body resting spot. I carefully lift away, trying not to wake him.

Bob is still snoring in his usual spot next to the bed. Stepping over the sleeping dog, I tiptoe toward the bathroom for a desperately needed shower and a fresh change of clothes.

For the first time since the accident, I look at my injuries. My bottom lip is swollen, and there’s a small cut under my eye. Other than that, I don’t look any worse for the wear.

I take a steaming hot shower, wash the filth of the accident away, and change into a pair of fleece-lined leggings and my favorite hoodie before pulling my wet hair into a messy bun. Back inside the bedroom, I’m surprised to find my bed empty and Bob missing.

“Bob?”

“Down here,” a deep voice answers from the first floor.

I enter the kitchen to find Bob eating a huge bowl of dog food. “Dude, you don’t need all of that.”

The man who shared my bed last night is standing in front of my stove. “I’m making your favorite—scrambled eggs.”

I smile. “How’d you know…” I stop my question, feeling dumb.

Zaph plates my breakfast and sets it on the table. “How are you feeling this morning?”

“I slept for the first time in a long while. I actually feel great.” I take a bite of the prepared eggs and sigh with the flavor explosion in my mouth. “These are the best eggs I’ve ever eaten.”

He smiles, takes a sip of something from a mug, and sits across from me at the table. The energy coming from him doesn’t match the look on his face. “What are you thinking?” I ask.

He pauses before answering. “We’re going to have to leave. Zephriel will return.”

I set my fork down, suddenly not hungry. “How long do we have?”

“The sooner the better. You and Bob aren’t safe here. I’m so sorry, Lucy. This is my fault.”

“How long?” I repeat.

“To be honest, I don’t know. It could be hours, days, or even weeks. I know my brother well enough to know, the sooner we leave, the better.”

“Will you come with us?” Leaving without Zaph terrifies me more than leaving my home.

He pauses, looking me in the eyes. “I’ve already put you in danger. My being here was and is dangerous. I brought this on you.”

“If you hadn’t come here, I would have never known you.” I reach over, lacing my fingers through his. The moment my skin comes in contact with his, goose bumps cover my body. I suddenly want nothing more than to be as close to Zaph as possible.

The look on Zaph’s face mirrors my inner turmoil. “Zaph, what is this?” I whisper.

“Our souls…they are connected.”

I swallow. “Why do I want to leap over this table and attack you?”

He smiles, and it’s sexy as hell. “Because you’re aggressive.”

The lump in my throat grows with his words. “Tell me about us.”

His eyes stay locked on mine, bringing chill bumps to every surface of my skin. “There is no us. Between lives, we are simply one.” His voice is soft as his thumb begins to caress my skin. “For many lifetimes, I’ve guarded you, and in between, we are joined as one soul. Two pieces of a puzzle.”

“What changed?”

Zaph eyes pull away from mine. “I was selfish.”

My entire body feels like it’s on fire. “If you’re my guardian angel, aren’t you with me always?”
