“Emma’s real name is Amber Johansson. She was born in a small village not far from Oslo.”

I stare at the ice giant. “She’s Norwegian?”

He nods. “She moved to America when she was young with her mother, who apparently became your nanny. She popped onto radar around ten years ago, with a new name and identity.”

“Emma Blanchard?”

“Emma Blanchard,” he confirms. “I’m sorry, Piper.”

“Did Alex send the address?”

He glances at his phone. “He did.”

I stand, moving toward the door. “Then what the hell are we waiting for?”

“Before you rush over there and kick ass, you need to make sure this is something you want to do.”

“What do you mean? Of course, I want to get the crystal back.”

“She won’t survive. Are you ready for that?”

“Everything she said was a lie. She’s been after that crystal my entire life.”

He steps in front of me, putting a hand on my shoulder. “Even though she had an ulterior motive, she was still your friend.”

He’s right. If it comes down to it, I don’t know if I can kill her or watch her be killed. “What do I do?”

“Stay here. I’ll take care of it. I’ll do everything I can to keep her alive.”

“Okay,” I whisper. “Thank you.”

“Lock down the elevator behind me, and don’t open the door for anyone,” he warns, heading toward the exit.

“Ty?” I call as he enters the elevator. “Be safe. I like having you around.”

“I will. I like being around.” The door closes in his face, giving him the most epic exit ever. I turn, not sure what to do with myself for the next few hours. I don’t know how far he has to go to find her apartment. God, how could I have been so stupid? Emma knows everything about me. Apparently, even more than I do.

Moving toward the couch, I pull a pillow into my lap and turn on the television. The light from the screen fills the dark room. Pushing the button on my remote, the normally open windows tint, hiding what’s happening inside from the world below.

In a moment straight of the Webster’s Dictionary for the word ironic, Frozen comes onto the screen. I howl a laugh as the opening credits and song begin. “Ty would love this,” I say out loud to no one.

On cue, the elevator dings, drawing my attention back to the room around me. I turn just as the doors slide open, revealing my best friend.

“Piper? You’re home.”

“Yeah. I took the red eye.”

“So, you were home when you called earlier?”

“No, I was still in the car,” I lie. “I literally just walked in and turned on the television.”

She looks around nervously. “Why’d you come back so soon?”

I shrug. “Norway wasn’t for me. Too many germs.”

Emma takes in my appearance. I imagine after a ten-hour plane ride and the tears I’ve just shed, I look like a hot mess. “What did you do to your hair? I’ve never seen it so messy.”

Subconsciously, I comb through the tangles with my fingers. “Yeah, it was a long flight.”
