“Piper, please.”

I push the only saved number on my phone, putting it on speakerphone. It takes a few rings for her familiar voice to answer.

“Piper!” she yells through the phone. “Do you know how worried I’ve been?”

“I’m sorry, Emma. I’ve had a horrible case of jet lag. I’ve been sleeping pretty much since I got here.” Ty gives me a thumbs-up. “How is life in Chicago?”

“Oh, you know. Same old, same old.”

“I guess that’s good. Have you had a chance to check on my penthouse?”

She laughs. “Not yet. I’ve been busy checking other things, if you know what I mean.”

I join her laugh, trying not to sound fake. “Sounds like you’re not missing me at all.”

“I’ll always miss you, Pipe. Tell me. Have you met any hot Vikings yet?”

“You know me, Em. I’ve barely left my hotel.” Ty shoots me a look.

“Girl, get out there and grab one of those giant men.”

“Yeah, I don’t see that happening. Emma, when do you think you’ll get to the penthouse?”

“I can stop by tomorrow if you want me to check on everything.”

Ty shakes his head. “No, that’s fine. I was just checking.”

“Piper, is everything okay? You sound strange?”

I laugh. “Yeah, just the jet lag.”

“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” She laughs. “That doesn’t leave you much. Bye, girl.”

“Bye, Emma.” My voice is soft as I hit the red button on my phone.

“She took it, didn’t she?”

“I’m afraid so,” Ty answers.

“How do we get it back?”

“You hold the power inside. You’re the child of Brimir. You’re connected to that crystal. It’s part of your soul.”

“I’ve never even been to her apartment. I don’t know anything about her. She’s played me this entire time.”

He pulls me close. “I’m sorry, Piper. I don’t have the right words for something like this.”

“Yeah, me either.” I fight the tears threatening to fall. “Now what?”

“We get what belongs to you.”

“How?” I pull back. “I don’t even know where she lives.”

He pulls his phone back from his pocket. “Luckily, I have ways of finding out.” He dials a number before putting his phone to his ear.

“What did you find?” He listens quietly to the voice on the other end of the line. “Text me the address.” He hangs up without another word.

“What did he say?”
