“That was … long,” he murmured. “No wonder you couldn’t remember any of it.”

Her mouth fell open in shock at being told her heartfelt vows were … long. “What?”

David continued to just look at her for several seconds, before letting go and cracking up. “I was totally kidding.”

“Ugh.” She slapped his shoulder.

“Oh, my God, that was so funny,” he said, still laughing. “Admit it.”

“I admit nothing,” she grumbled, only to have her annoyance drain away, either because she’d had a lot to drink that night, or because it reallyhadbeen funny, and she couldn’t help but join him in his laughter. “You’resucha dick.”

After regaining his composure, he asked, “Were you really going to say ‘kick its fucking ass’ in church?”

“Yes, but I was going to whisper it to you, so no one else would hear.”

His expression turned tender and he took her face in his hands. Bending his head, he kissed her like he had at the church, softly at first, then with more passion. “I’m actually glad you didn’t say those in front of everyone, because now they’re just for me.”

“Your turn,” she told him.

David’s mouth quirked for a minute, and then he said, in his most solemn voice, “Paige, I vow to be devoted to you until my last breath and make sure you know how much you’re loved, every minute of every day. In you, I’ve found a true partner in life, one to share the good things we’ll be blessed with, and to get through any bad times that will test us. I promise to belong to you, and you alone, to cherish you with my heart and my body, because there is no one else for me in this life.”

Because he’d roasted her, Paige felt obligated to do the same. “That’s … it? That’s all there is?”

“Yep. Short and sweet … and easy to remember.”

This time, their shared laughter was soft. As it died down, David nudged her legs apart so he could settle in between them, and then with eyes locked on hers, eased into her. “Everything feels so much different,” he whispered, as he bottomed out and held himself still. “Can you feel it?”

“I can feel it,” she whispered back.

At first, they moved slowly, like they had endless time in the world. However, it wasn’t long before need took over and she felt the shift as David started to drive into her harder and faster, and she knew he was approaching his orgasm. Wrapping her legs around his waist and hooking her ankles together (smiling a little at the sight of her shoes), Paige urged him on, drawing loud groans from deep within his chest that vibrated against her. Seconds later, as he came hard, his fingers gripped handfuls of her hair while his mouth crashed down on hers, bruising their lips.

Long after David’s orgasm had faded away, she continued to hold him deep inside her, wanting to keep their bodies intimately joined and savor the welcome press of his weight. For long, near-silent moments—save for their tandem breaths in the room—they lay there, spent, and as the candles flickered around them, a sense of profound peace overtook Paige, making her smile.

She was married.

Chapter 90

David surprised Paige by taking her to Cannon Beach, Oregon, where they’d spent their first honeymoon. “We’re not staying at the Sandpiper Inn?” she asked as they drove down the main street, and past the building in question. It had been sort of a dive back in the day, and still was, looking even more weathered than before.

“I actually thought about it, but everyone talked me out of it.”

“Everyone?”

“My mom. Dick. Jules. Even Kim had an opinion.”

“Ah, okay. So, where are we staying?”

He pointed to one of the majestic hotels that lined Canon Beach. “High Tide Resort & Spa?” she said, reading the sign. “It looks rather grand.”

“It is. They even have a day spa.” He pulled into the parking lot. “Only the best for my wife this time around.”

He’d gotten them a suite with a beach view, fireplace, private balcony, and large jacuzzi tub. “This is a few steps up from the Sandpiper Inn,” she mused after they’d gotten to their room. “I’ll have to thank your mom, Dick, Jules, and Kim next time I see them.”

They spent the rest of the day in bed, first taking a nap, then having sweaty, needy, mind-blowing sex. Afterwards, they ordered champagne and drank it in the jacuzzi tub, and as they were leaning back against opposite sides, relaxed and flushed from the hot water, she said, “Going forward, I won’t be using any birth control.”

“Are you serious?” he asked, trying to keep the glee out of his voice, but failing badly.

Paige nodded.
