Maya went numb. She didn't want her mother to know what happened and what equation they shared. “Mom, you won't get it,” she calmed her voice.

“No, I do. I do understand what you are blaming him for, but he didn't do anything. You threw up last night after dinner, and that’s when I arrived home. I cleaned you up and changed your dress. I couldn’t get you dressed more appropriately; hence I made you wear just this robe. Ranveer didn’t do this.”

Shocked, Maya stared open-mouthed. She hadn't considered her mother might be responsible. Avoiding Ranveer's gaze, she absorbed the truth and felt ashamed for accusing him baselessly, despite his obvious desire for her.

“He's too principled to take advantage like that. You owe him an apology for your silly assumptions and saying you hate him,” Garima admonished.

Maya bit her inner cheek. Ranveer walked out of the room, letting the mother-daughter drama continue. He was agitated, and no apology from Maya Bajaj could fix his mood.

“What kind of relationship is this, Maya?” Garima scolded again. “You don’t trust him?”

Maya brushed her hair in frustration.

“I know you have trust issues, Maya, but your eyes are open, aren't they? You can clearly see what he has been doing for us, for you. Who does that? Your father never took our responsibility even after being related to us, and this man, who is he? He is no one to us, yet he did so much, which no one from even the family will do. And you hurt him by putting such allegations.”

“Mom, I was scared,” she blurted out. “I don’t want to end up like you,” she murmured.

Garima felt hurt, but she knew this was the only fear that haunted them both. Maya had every right to have a permanent relationship with the right man who could look after her forever.

“It scares me how he's controlling my life now. I feel like he's pulling my strings, and I'm suffocating.” Maya continued.

Tears filled Garima's eyes. “Ranveer is nothing like your father. If you distrust him, you shouldn't have drunk excessively last night. You are confused, Maya, and this confusion is going to lead you to a dark place where I have already been.”

Maya understood which dark place her mother was talking about—it was mental instability. She recalled the doctor mentioning during one therapy session that mental sickness could be hereditary. She didn’t want to face the same sickness in the future that her mother had.

“Maya, I sense something off in your relationship, ever since you said you were dating. What is it?” Garima asked nervously.

Maya shut her eyes, desperate to confess it was fake, that Ranveer had ruined them years ago. But it was too late for truth to fix anything now. His hot and cold behavior was bothering her these days. Day by day, she felt indebted by Ranveer Malhotra’s favors, and she hadn’t done anything in return that could make them equal.

“It's nothing,” she murmured, conflicted by gratitude and unease. “I think the medicines are making me cranky. I shouldn’t have blamed Ranveer like that,” Maya admitted.

Garima accepted that explanation without suspecting anything else.

“You will be fine, just take a day off today,” Garima suggested.

“No,” Maya denied. “I have a lot of work pending. I should go get ready for work.”

“Don’t forget to apologize to him,” Garima shouted as Maya headed out of the room.

Yes, that was going to be a big deal now.

A while Later

“Vivek,” Garima answered the call cautiously, ensuring no one overheard her speak his name.

“I heard you moved in with Ranveer and Maya?” Vivek shouted.

Garima rolled her eyes, having expected his upset reaction. “Yes, I did. I assumed you called me to know about Maya's health,” she snapped.

“I want to know that too, but why did you go there?”

“Because Ranveer wanted to care for us. He's a good man who's been so thoughtful.”

“I don't believe that,” Vivek dismissed. “I know what he's capable of. He's a womanizer - our daughter isn't safe there.”

“Oh please,” Garima scoffed. “I don't know his past, but I doubt he'll ever cheat on Maya.”

“How can you be so sure?” Vivek challenged.
