“Because I live with them and see it daily - his actions, his care for Maya. It's easy for you to judge from afar, but I know the reality up close. He may be controlling, but he protects what's his.”

Vivek gritted his teeth, unable to explain his full concerns about Ranveer's potential harm to Maya. Neither could he reveal the truth yet.

“With his tight security, I can't just come see you there. Even a mosquito needs his permission to enter,” Vivek grumbled.

Garima sighed and shook her head. “We'll meet outside in a week after I finish a ritual for Maya's wellbeing. I'll contact you then.”

“Please do. I look forward to seeing you,” Vivek said hopefully before they ended the tense call.

Blitz

Maya was super confused with the way she had behaved earlier that morning with Ranveer Malhotra. She had crossed a line with such a sensitive allegation. As her mother insisted, she owed him an apology. Maya dialed his direct number but it went to voicemail. She considered leaving a message but changed her mind and hung up. That wouldn't suffice. She had to speak with him directly, though that seemed more difficult.

Later at the office, Aisha knocked on Maya's door, wearing a visitor badge as required to access the premises and continue guarding her. Maya felt self-conscious as colleagues stared and gossiped about the special treatment she received. But there was no stopping such talk.

“The car is here to pick you up,” Aisha informed her.

“Thanks, I'm nearly finished,” Maya replied while gathering her things as Aisha took her bag. On their way out, Maya stopped in the lobby. “Can you ask Aman if Ranveer is still at the office or has left for home?”

After a quick call, Aisha reported, “Sir is still there.”

“Okay, take me to his office then,” Maya decided.

Aisha gave the appropriate instructions to the driver who accelerated the vehicle to Malhotra Office.

The driver brought them to Ranveer's building where luckily most staff had already departed, leaving only a few quietly working.

Aman looked surprised to see Maya. “Ranveer didn't mention you were coming.”

“He doesn't know,” Maya admitted. “Where is he?”

“In his office cabin.”

“Can you tell him I am here to see him?”

“Sure.”

After poking his head in to announce Maya's arrival, Aman returned looking disappointed.

“Can I see him now?” Maya asked hopefully.

“No. He's busy and asked you to go home.”

Maya had expected he would react the same way.

“No, I will wait until he finishes.”

“Okay,” Aman nodded and left.

Maya sat on the couch. Glancing at her watch, Maya settled in for however long Ranveer chose to make her wait. She recalled him doing this once before when she had to apologize about the contract. History repeating itself, it seemed.

From behind the glass wall of his office, Ranveer stealthily peered out to see if she had left yet. Instead, he found Maya sitting patiently on the couch. Why was she here? He didn't mind her presence but handling this woman kept him perpetually on edge unlike any past relationship. Her nearness intoxicated him while distance haunted him. She was becoming his worst distraction, and he desperately needed to understand why.

Chapter 27

Maya checked her watch. She had been waiting an hour outside Ranveer's office. She knew he saw her there but continued ignoring her. Yet she couldn't blame him. He had already been exceedingly gracious towards her frequent outbursts. It was strange for a man of his stature to indulge her tantrums.
