“You want me to sign them, I will,” she snapped. “But if you talk about death one more time, I am walking out.”

Ranveer smiled softly. She leaned back and looked away as the attendant reached their table to serve them. She lost her appetite. Ranveer’s dream had started haunting her. He tried to feed her the first morsel, but she denied and started eating herself.

“If death ever parts us, it will be me before you,” she declared.

Ranveer’s brow raised.

“Now you talk about death one more time, and I am walking out,” he muttered.

Maya went quiet for a moment, and then when he tried to feed her again, she allowed him to do so. Nothing was more precious than spending time with him. When they were almost done, Ranveer got a message which he read and sighed in disappointment.

“Your mother likes this restaurant too?” he asked.

“Mumma? Why?”

He pointed her to look at the entrance door from where Garima walked inside and before Maya could understand why she was here, Vivek Bajaj followed Garima. They headed together to a corner table and seated.

“Lunch date,” he mumbled.

Maya turned back to her husband and shrugged.

“If that keeps her happy, I have no qualms,” she said.

Ranveer smiled.

“Desserts, baby?” he offered.

Maya checked her watch.

“No time for that. I have some meetings lined up,” she replied.

Ranveer rolled his eyes.

“You are prioritizing work over me?”

“Shut up,” she giggled. “There is nothing above you in my life. And you know that too. So, stop bullying me and drop me back to work.”

That lit up his face.

“And when am I getting my dessert?” he teased.

“Tonight,” she winked at him and grabbed her purse. “Now can we please hurry?”

Ranveer smirked and, settling the bill, they walked hand in hand towards the door. However, Maya couldn’t just walk out without seeing her mother. She stopped by their table. Vivek and Garima were shocked to see the couple.

“Maya?” Garima got up. “What are you doing here?”

“Ranveer got me here for lunch,” she answered. “And we are leaving now.”

“Oh, okay,” Garima was a bit stuck on what to say further. She knew Maya didn’t like Vivek meeting her often, and she could make an issue of this, but Maya didn’t react that way. Ranveer gave a gentle nod to Vivek Bajaj as a courtesy and then hugged his mother-in-law too. He didn’t want the old woman to feel targeted.

“Got to go. Bye, Mumma. Reach home safe,” Maya passed a quick kiss to her mother, and waving at her, she and Ranveer walked out. Garima was stunned by her gestures. She sat down again, giving a blank stare to Vivek, who similarly had no words to express what just happened.

“I … I don’t understand… She didn’t mind us being together,” Vivek spoke.

“I should have told her,” Garima replied. “She must be upset with me.”

Vivek didn’t let her feel low again. He rubbed her arm.
