“Hereon, you wouldn’t have to meet me secretly,” he declared. “Because we will be together, forever.”

Garima was confused.

“I have decided, Garima. I want you to become my wife.”

Garima felt like she would have an attack if he continued this discussion. Vivek had gripped her hand so tightly that she almost froze.

“I haven’t talked to Adira yet, but I will. I know she wouldn’t react nicely, but she has to understand now. And you speak to Maya. I am sure she wouldn’t have an issue if her mother gets the legal status of being my wife, which she always yearned for,” Vivek insisted.

Garima didn’t speak for a minute, but soon she opened her mouth.

“I hope you know what you are doing, Vivek.”

“I do,” he replied.

“But I can’t,” Garima snapped. “You are late… very late,” she added. “We have always hurt our babies, Vivek, by our relationship. Both Adira and Maya. I don’t want to hurt them anymore. Adira doesn’t want me, and Maya doesn’t want you. That’s the only truth, and I have learnt to accept it. And so should you.”

Vivek’s jaw dropped at her decision. The woman who always wanted him to accept her before the world was now openly denying him without any remorse. He wanted to give her the rights she deserved, and instead she chose to reject him. Was he really very late in taking this step?

Chapter 64

Paradise

Maya gestured for her husband to look at Garima, who was silently eating. They always had dinners together, and though Ranveer spoke very little, it was Maya and Garima who kept the conversation flowing with topics and gossip of the day. But today, Garima was unusually quiet and not in the mood. Ranveer glanced at his mother-in-law and then turned back to his wife to assure her that he would do something about it.

“Why is everyone so quiet today? No topics to share?” he opened the conversation.

Garima offered a weak smile in response. There was so much she wished to talk about, but she lacked the courage. Seeing her still quiet, Maya touched her mother’s cheek.

“Are you not feeling well, Mumma?”

It broke her silence. Garima dropped her spoon and turned to her.

“I am sorry, Maya,” she mumbled.

“Sorry? For?”

“For not telling you that I was meeting Vivek today.”

Maya sighed.

“Mumma, it’s fine. I am no longer going to intervene in that subject. You are free to do what you like.”

“No, no, Maya,” Garima held her hand. “You have every right to restrict me. You are my daughter. And you should know everything.”

Ranveer kept his eyes glued on both the women. It seemed like Garima wished to share some news. He just hoped it would be positive for everyone.

“Vivek proposed to me for marriage today,” Garima voiced out her concerns.

Maya froze. Her gut knotted. She hadn’t expected that man to do so ever. All these years, she wanted her mother to get her rights, but that never happened. If she gets that today, she wouldn’t mind. But she was skeptical about Vivek Bajaj’s real motives in doing so. Just a few days back, Maya had declared of breaking every tie with him. She didn’t want his last name either to be connected to her name. Did that trigger his decision to marry her mother? Ranveer paused eating to apprehend the pros and cons of this marriage, if it ever happens. He knew Adira would have a problem if this happens. And that stubborn girl would create more problems for all of them.

“I am happy for you,” Maya replied.

Garima’s eyes filled with tears.

“Oh dear,” she cried. “I knew you would be happy for me. You have always stood by me, Maya. You have accepted my foolishness, tolerated my blind love for Vivek, looked after my health. You did everything a daughter should have done for her parent. Now it is your turn to be happy.”

“Which I am,” Maya pressed her mother’s arm. “Ranveer is breaking all charts in keeping me happy. You know that too.”
