Garima smiled.

“If she is willing to know about him, why not ask him directly? Tell her relationships got to be transparent. If she knows his goodness and flaws, both, and is ready to accept them together, she doesn’t need to worry about anything else.”

“But, Mom. What about the pain he gave her in the past?”

“That was past, Maya, and if we keep holding it forever, the past will never go away. It will keep haunting your present and spoiling your future. It is up to us how we wish to live. Grieve for the past or smile at the future? If your friend thinks he has changed for good and genuinely wants her to be his life partner, then she should take a chance. And isn’t life all about chances?”

Maya passed a weak smile to her mother. Garima touched Maya’s cheek.

“This is the first time ever we are sharing such a heartfelt conversation, and that too related to your friend. What’s her name?” she asked.

Maya was in a fix but she made an excuse and cuddled back into her mother’s lap.

“You don’t know her, Mom. She works at my office.”

“Hmm,” Garima started patting her gently. “Tell her not to think much. Not every man is wrong. And there are very few who know how to correct their mistakes. He seems to be one of them to me.”

Maya gripped her mother’s lap tight. Is Ranveer really the one for her?

Chapter 38

Maya buckled her sandals and looked in the mirror. The attire wasn't new. She wore such formal pants with semi-casual shirts neatly tucked in them, but why was she looking different? There were some changes in her that she was unable to comprehend. Oh, it's the smile. She was wearing a smile on her lips which was unusual so far. She had a whole bunch of issues to worry about, right from her mother's sickness to the office headache. She handled each of her duties without waiting for someone else to fulfill it for her or even giving her support. But today, she had someone who was taking care of all of that without even making her realize it or waiting for her acknowledgment. Ranveer Malhotra. He came into her life like a hurricane. Without meeting each other, they imbibed hatred for each other in their hearts. He misunderstood her actions and punished her, but now the same man was doing uncountable favors. He might not expect anything in return, but he had confronted his desire to marry her. Putting behind that kind of past was impossible, but as her mother said, if she kept dragging the past into the present, how would the future change? Everyone deserves a chance, and she can give him one too. But there were other aspects to be looked into before she gave a green light to his proposal. Their relationship would not be solely on his terms. He would have to abide by a few of hers as well. Hoping to converse about this with the man himself soon, she headed out from her room, picking her purse on the way. Her mother was sitting on the couch reading a magazine. She looked very relaxed and happy. It was not just the comfort or luxury making this possible; it was her inner happiness, which she thought was because her daughter was now slowly getting settled with someone who knew how to look after her. She treated Ranveer as the best man for Maya.

“I am leaving, Mom,” Maya reached Garima and hugged her from behind.

“So early?”

“Yes, I have an early meet,” she replied, picking up the magazine in her hand, which her mother was reading so attentively. It was exclusively about Indian weddings preparations.

“What is all this, Mom?” she asked.

“It’s my desire.” She pulled Maya and made her sit on the couch beside her. “I always wanted to go through the joy of being the bride and enjoying all the attention. But,” she paused. “It couldn’t happen.”

“Mom,” Maya pressed Garima’s hand as she got emotional.

“No, I don’t regret it anymore. My time is gone. But yours is still to come.”

Maya froze.

“What I couldn’t do for myself, I want to fulfill it for you.”

Maya had no clue how to reply to that. Marriage was never on her list, not because she didn’t want to, but she was too engrossed in her problems to think of having a life partner.

“I am getting late, Mom,” she kept the magazine aside. “I will see you in the evening,” she kissed her mother’s cheek and got up.

“Yes, don’t be late. I don’t want to miss the beginning of the movie,” Garima smiled.

“Movie?” she came to a halt.

“Ranveer is taking us for a Movie tonight. Didn’t he tell you?”

When did he plan that? And he didn’t seem to be a movie man. In fact, neither was she. She didn’t even recall when was the last time she saw a movie in theatre.

“Okay, I will be there on time,” she replied.

Maya made her way to the exit and called for the private elevator. Once again, she forgot her mobile phone inside. She had kept it on the couch while talking to her mother earlier. She turned around only to find Ranveer Malhotra handing her the phone, his eyes smoldering. She froze again. He was in his three-piece suit, with a slight prickly stubble, and a smirk lingering on his lips. His tailored suit accentuated every contour of his well-built physique, and the sharp cut of his jaw added a touch of raw masculinity. His eyes held a hint of mischief, as if he knew the effect he had on her. A sizzling undercurrent passed between them, making her heart race.

“Don't want your phone back?” he asked, noticing she was making no effort to take the phone from him right away.
