“But he would still be seriously injured. You would be behind bars,” she countered.

“For not even a few minutes, you know me,” he dismissed.

His attitude irked her, as did his replies. But she didn’t give up.

“Do whatever you want when you are single for the world. But if you intend to project the image that we're a couple, I won't tolerate my boyfriend displaying aggressive behavior in public. You need to get a grip on that, Ranveer. Do you understand?”

Ranveer was stunned at her commanding tone.

“You know what I feel like doing right now?” he cross-questioned.

Maya kept staring in his eyes with fury.

“Pin you down and kiss that mouth of yours,” he added.

Her gaze fell for a second, and goosebumps crawled on her skin, but she knew it would strengthen him all the more and show him a way to control her, which she didn’t want him to do.

“You do that, and I am out of your life,” she met his eyes again and warned.

Now that’s what he called a challenge. The car halted at the hotel again. Maya got down and headed inside the hotel.

“Maya, come back here,” he snapped, but she ignored him. He muttered a curse under his breath, then descended to trail after her. At times, he couldn't fathom who was taking the lead. Just when he believed he had her completely under his influence, he found himself losing that grip.

Dinner

“Namaste Daadi,” Maya greeted the old lady who had invited the two for dinner at her place.

“Namaste, where is my grandson?”

Maya faked a smile.

“He is on a call downstairs. He asked me to go ahead.”

Ever since they had returned back to the hotel after the auction, Ranveer had no time for himself or her. He obviously had to wrap up any footage of his heated interaction with Kunal at the auction. How could he stay low and not deal with that? A few phone calls and there would never be any evidence that he had misbehaved with his stepbrother.

“It's totally fine. I know how much he loves working. Come inside,” Daadi took her in. “This is not the first time he has shown inclination towards business. But it is not his fault. Doing business is like his pastime.”

Maya could agree to that. She had never seen him doing anything apart from business. Daadi was the only one who could tell her what Ranveer Malhotra actually was. She wouldn’t find his information anywhere else. So, since he was not here yet, Maya decided to dig more.

“So, all of this empire was left to him by his father?” Maya asked.

She and Daadi sat on the couch.

“No. Not everything. He has earned most of this by himself. He has grown our small family business into an empire. And I am so proud of him.”

Maya kept processing all this information.

“I'm glad he didn't decide to move on with the Maliks. Otherwise, things would have been different.”

Maya frowned. He hadn’t moved with the Maliks?

“You mean after his mother married Dev Malik, she didn't take Ranveer along?”

“She wanted to. But I didn't let him go. Why should my grandson stay with some unknown family? And I didn't want the Maliks to raise him. He belonged to my son. Why would I let that happen?”

Maya understood Daadi's point of view but didn’t accept it.

“How old was he when his mother married Dev Malik?”
