“Until you didn’t.” I pointed my fork again.

He snorted. “Something like that.”

“And now you’re trapped here.”

“More or less.”

“I want to know more.”

“Of course you do.”

He watched me, eyes digging for more than I was willing to give.

I looked away, feeling undone and powerless. How is it that with one look, I felt so bare, so vulnerable, before him?

He was handsome and proud. He’d lived lifetimes, and I wanted to lie down beside him and hear every detail of them all. An angel as old as he knew so much. Had seen so much. I secretly hungered to draw close to him.

But then I’d never get back to Elèor.

After everything the Domenents had done to Mother while she still lived, I knew these Sky Watchers would do worse to me if I failed.

We fell quiet, taking some time to revel in the delicious food. I thoroughly enjoyed the light breeze, which kept filtering into the chamber. I ate until I was content. After a few goblets of wine, a nice hum built in my belly as slumber weighed down my eyelids.

The Domenent sat back, his own itis bringing him to a lull. He smiled contentedly, his gaze dancing over my features.

“Domenent, will you tell me something?”

“Even in this stupor, you’re not getting my name.”

I knocked his shin with my foot, triggering a chuckle. I brushed away my hair, drawing his full attention. He blinked, his eyes clearing enough for me to know he was listening.

“I don’t want your name, Domenent.”

I batted my lashes. His mouth scrunched, his nostrils flared. He twitched, his chest beating visibly faster. Fool. I had him right where I wanted him.

“Tell me. A Judge as mighty as you has his own secrets that would bow him low.”

I gestured to his enormous frame, biting my lip as I did so. It sent him into a frenzy, as he shifted, working hard to exhale evenly.

“So powerful. So fierce. Envied by all,” I purred, leaning closer to him in the warm light. His nostrils flared as he pressed his lips together. “Dearest Domenent. With such incomparable strength, what would it take to make you like any angel of Avari?”

He slinked close, blowing a hot breath that brushed my lips. A chill ran down my spine. How tempted I was to forget my rotting bargain. He pushed a strand of hair behind my ear, then brushed the curve of my ear with such gentleness, my heart squeezed. Eyes lost in a haze, he breathed.

“To be like any angel, hm?” He slurred. “If I were bound securely by roots woven from the bark of mist trees, I would be rendered powerless.” The glow of his eyes dimmed the closer he neared. “My ethèr would diminish, and I would become like any other Domenent of Avari.”

He finished in nothing but breath and desire. It was a test of self-control to not lean in and steal a kiss.

Steal more.

Gods.

I had to be free of him, or I’d end up betraying myself. I waited several beats before feigning a yawn.

“The Temptress is sleepy.”

“She is.” Another yawn. “Fly me to my chambers, please.”

“Pushy little fae, aren’t you?”
