I smiled, batting my lashes. He sucked in a sharp breath, his eyes flashing.

This was almost too easy.

“What if I told you I was born this way?”

He chuckled darkly.

“The earthen hues of your brows tell a different tale.”

“Mm. Perceptive as he is insufferable.”

He flashed his teeth.

“Can’t be too bad if you’re willing to tolerate me through supprèst.”

He winked. The insignificant gesture left me dizzy. I blinked, working to stifle the heat drying out my throat.

Gods.

It was going to be a long dinner.

I poured myself some wine and cleared my throat.

“Domenent of the Tower. How long have you dwelled here?”

“Domenent of the Tower is long and boring.”

“Give me your name and I can skip the pleasantries.”

I smiled wickedly.

He grinned back.

“You’ll have to earn it, Temptress.”

“At this dinner or in your bed?”

He jerked, his jaw hanging. The Domenent blinked, straining to control whatever indecent desires were flooding his mind. I sipped my wine coolly, waiting.

“Temptress,” he breathed, slipping even closer. Our knees bumped beneath the table. I didn’t move my leg. He didn’t either. I pointed my fork at him while dragging the platter of steaming meats over.

“I have this feeling in my gut, Domenent. That you’re in this tower by your doing.”

“Brainwashed by the Sky Watchers, are we?”

“Aren’t you basically one of them?”

“I’m a Judge. They’re Watchers. We are not the same.”

“Oh?” I cocked a brow. “Explain.”

He measured me with a long stare. After a beat, he nodded.

“I’ve lived in the cosm of Zurethe a long time.” He looked to the open veranda. “But I was born elsewhere.” A beat. “In Dèrneveil.”

He ran a hand through his hair. A cool breeze filtered into the chamber, settling around our shoulders.

“At birth, I was given over to Dèrnetheth—the Temple of the Judges. That’s where I was raised with Domenents of my sect. We upheld the Creed, met out justice, and maintained order throughout the cosms we were commissioned to serve.”
