Beau knew there was a jab in there. “Can I see her?”

Wendy sighed. “I’ll send her out.”

“I don’t want to make her uncomfortable,” hesaid. “I’m happy to come inside.”

“That’s why I’m sending her out. That houseis Eloise’s safe space. I get that you’ve probably been in there but until shetells me she has forgiven you and wants you in our house, you’renot coming in. It’s nothing personal. I’m protecting my daughter, because I failed until this moment.”

“I … I didn’t mean to hurt her.”

“That’s the thing withmen, you never mean tohurt, and yet, it seems to be the only thing you’re capable ofdoing.” Wendy shook her head as she walked away. She turned towardhim as she got to the door. “If she’s not out in five minutes, I’dleave.”

Beau knew he deserved this. He’d been cruelto Eloise. He hurt her when he promised he wouldn’t do so again, and he hated that.

Seconds passed and he tried not to look atthe clock, but he just couldn’t help it. One minute tickedby, then a second. Theywere close to nearly the five-minute mark when he saw the dooropen, and out stepped Eloise.

She looked so tired. She wore a pair ofsweatpants, a jacket, and she had on some snow boots. There was athick layer of snow on the ground, and she walked toward hiscar. He’d forgotten howcold it was because he ran hotter than normal.

“Do you want to climb in?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Nah, I’m quite happy tostand here,” she said. “What do you want, Beau?”

“I wanted to see how you were.” It was fucking lame.

He saw the paleness of her face. She waspregnant with his child but it looked like she had lost too much weight. Shouldn’t apregnant woman be putting weight on?

“I’m fine. As you can see. Perfectlyfine. It’s really cold, and I just want to head back inside.”

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“Yeah, me too.” She looked distracted as sheglanced back at the house.

“What can I do?”

This brought her attention back around tohim. “What?”

“I … I miss you, Eloise. I don’t … I don’tlike not seeing you. I need to be able to fix this.” He hated beingin the wrong.

“Oh, so now that you’ve decided you miss me, you figure thischild I’m carrying is now yours, and well, you want your fun, isthat it?” she asked.

“Eloise.”

“No, you know what, save it. I’m notinterested. You hurt me, Beau. I…”—she stopped andhe watched as she took a breath—“you were my first, and that might not mean anything toyou, but it did to me. It meant a lot to me, but trust me, I learnfrom my mistakes, and when it comes to you, I won’t be makinganother one.”

“You hate me now but there is going to comea point when you’re going to realize this between us, is happening.”

She’d already started to walk away, and hedesperately needed her to stop.

“Why?”

“You’re carrying my child, Eloise.”

“Ah, but you see, you were convinced thiswasn’t your child.”

“I can admit to being wrong,” he said.

He climbed out of the truck, but Eloise hadalready moved toward her front door. “I’ll fix this,” Beausaid.

“A relationship cannot just be fixed,Beau!”
