“I’m falling for you,” I whispered.

“Good,” he softly returned and kissed the top of my head. “It would suck standing down here all by myself and you not nearing the edge so I could catch you.”

Did he…

Did that mean…

He kept his mouth where it was, when he continued to give me everything.

“When you’re ready, I’ll catch you, baby. You got my promise on that.”

Trust me.

You got my promise.

I closed my eyes, held on tight, and jumped.

The fall wasn’t far.

But lying there in Easton’s arms, he fulfilled his promise to catch me.

TWENTY-EIGHT

“Zane needs to move the office to a warehouse.”

I glanced up from the mess I’d made on Easton’s desk, which included colored Post-It notes I’d borrowed from Kira, to Lincoln standing in the doorway.

“Or you can just take over Easton’s office since he’s never in here.” He paused again, smiled—no dimples like his brother’s but still sinful. “Bet if he shared it with you he’d be in here more.”

I had no idea what he was talking about other than he was correct; for the last three days I had taken over Easton’s office. His desk now had papers strewn all over it. The wall to my left had sticky notes that to the untrained eye (meaning anyone but mine) would look haphazard. And I’d asked Cash to bring in a rolling whiteboard.

There was a method to my madness.

Sticky notes on the wall: stuff to research.

Sticky notes on the desk: Patricia’s husband’s associates before he died.

Whiteboard: Maddon’s movements.

Easton had not cared I’d commandeered his office.

Maybe Lincoln did.

“I could move to the conference room,” I offered.

His smile fled and his green eyes narrowed.

It made him no less handsome in a badass sort of way that screamed he wasn’t pleased.

“Seriously? You got ‘move to the conference room’ from what I said?”

“Well, your brother having to pick up and move shop would be a pain in the ass and cost a whack. I’m taking up an office that’s meant to be used by one of his employees. So…”

I let that hang and Lincoln Parker pounced.

“And you’re not an employee? Have you checked your bank balance today? Paychecks hit last night. I think you’ll find you’re no exception. What I meant was, the team’s growing. Has been growing since Patheon became Silver and we got KK and Layla. I was joking but I’m not wrong. My brother’s grown out of this space but his sentimental ass doesn’t want to admit it. This is where Red started. This was the start of him building his family. This is the home he gave me when I came back. So he won’t give it up. But again, I was joking. Though not about Easton never being in here. He’s allergic to paperwork and hates sitting behind a desk.”

I knew about the desk part. The last three days during the team briefs in the conference room he’d stood, leaning against the wall. Close to me, but not sitting. That saying, the other times before when we’d been in there, he sat next to me because he was giving me that—Easton within reaching distance in case I needed him.
