“No, you’re my only one.”

The words come across intimate somehow, and I want to take them back, especially when Hawk stares at me with his unforgiving gaze.

“Grab your shit,” he grinds out through his teeth. “I’ll walk you to your car.”

First, I nod in thanks, but then I realize what he just said.

“No, you can’t.”

There are a lot of rules surrounding our interactions with clients. Developing a personal relationship with one of them would get us automatically dismissed from dancing at the club. Clients are not allowed to see what we drive or where we live, hence separate parking lot that’s not accessible to anyone but the staff.

“JJ will walk me to my car,” I stammer out. “He does it every night. I’ll be safe.”

Hawk shakes his head at me. “Who the fuck is JJ?”

I flail my arms about, looking nothing like the confident woman who walked into this room earlier.

“He is the security guard,” I explain.

I start walking toward the door, ready to be out of here. When my hand touches the knob, I wait for a moment to see if he’ll stop me. He doesn’t say anything at all, so I rush out and run down the hallway until I get to the dressing room. By the time I drop into the chair at my assigned table, I am out of breath.

Lala pops out of nowhere, a knowing look on her face.

“How did it go with Hawk?”

I look around to make sure no one can hear us.

“I can’t do this, Lala,” I whisper yell at her. “I almost got caught.”

She has the nerve to laugh. “Caught doing what? Blowing him?”

I blush at her words, but I am also worried that she obviously watched. It’s like I am under constant surveillance.

“He asked me about the Steel Lizards,” I whisper again, ready to tell her everything I learned from my encounter with Hawk.

With every word I utter, I get a bitter taste in my mouth. It’s unpleasant and toxic.

It’s betrayal.

Hawk

You’re my only one…

Ruby Santiago’s words echo in my head as I make my way to the cheap motel closest to the strip club.

It’s really bizarre how I am slowly becoming more eager to see her. There was some progress made tonight as far as me giving her information, but it wasn’t as much as I wanted to. The blowjob kind of took priority in our encounter.

The panic attack she had when we were done threw me off. She was trying to ask me questions about my whereabouts, but very obvious about it. Had I not already known what was going on, I could’ve easily gotten suspicious and put a bullet in her head. The girl is really bad at this hit, that’s for sure.

I park my bike in front of the door to my room, making sure not to leave any valuables on it. For a second, I debate whether I should just push it inside the room with me. This is a seedy part of town. It wouldn’t be hard at all for anyone to steal it.

Checking the time on my watch, I realize that I need to call at the club and check in.

“Status,” Prez barks into the phone as soon as he answers.

“Not much to report.”
