After all these years, after everything that’s happened between us, especially in the last forty-eight hours, she still loves me.

And I fucked it all up.

CHAPTER 28

The truth

Hunter

The tension behind my eyes is unbearable when I wake up the morning after I hashed it all out with Zach. I stare at the ceiling, but all I see is his shocked face when I told him about how I had lost our baby. My suspicions had been right, he truly believed that I had an abortion.

That, on top of the shock to my system after we had sex last night, and today I am good for nothing.

Last night, when I went downstairs to talk to Zach, I could tell that he was freaked out over what had just happened between us. I was too, more so because he made me come while causing me pain. What kind of a freak am I?

I press a hand to my stomach, willing my nerves to calm a bit. I want to talk to Zach about that as well, but I need to give him some space, I think. The whole misunderstanding about me losing the baby threw him for a loop, and he couldn’t even lie next to me last night.

That fact is depressing more than anything else right now. I craved his touch. I just wanted him to hold me and tell me we would be okay. But he sent me upstairs with a gentle kiss to my forehead, and the promise that we’d talk more today.

My cell phone starts ringing in the dead silence of Zach’s bedroom. With a groan, I force myself to roll over, then reach inside my bag that I pulled close to my side of the bed last night. I smile when I see that it’s my cousin.

“Chlo,” my voice comes out raspy from sleep, or lack thereof.

“Slayer, I about stroked out trying to get a hold of you. Are you okay?” She sounds like she is in distress, and I feel bad that it’s because of me.

“I’m okay, Chloe. Thank you for checking on me, though. I love you.”

“I need to know that the asshole didn’t hurt you, Hunter,” Chloe’s voice comes out a little more urgent now. “He really scared me the way he dragged you away like that.”

I chuckle at that. He really did drag me away. “I thought you liked Zach.”

“Not if he’s abusing you, I don’t,” comes her quick response, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from her. I would do the same for her.

“I really love you, Chloe,” I smile into the phone. “You’re the best cousin and friend a girl could have.”

“Are you at your parents’?” she almost whispers into the speaker.

“No, Zach brought me to his house last night when we landed. And, oh my gosh, Chlo,” I gasp in delayed shock. “You’re not going to believe who was waiting for us on the plane!”

“Who?”

“You know Marco, right? Ridge’s best friend who stayed with us for a while when they were in high school?” I am completely awake now, trying to tell her all the gossip as fast as I can.

“Yeah, I remember Marco. I haven’t seen him in years, not since I went to college I think.” Chloe went to college in Wisconsin, and she stayed there until recently when she moved back home.

“It was Marco’s plane we flew on. And his wife was on it, too. She used to date Ridge,” I whisper yell into the phone even though nobody can hear us.

“Wait, Lexi Cavalli?”

“Yes!” Is that not what I just said?

“Hunter,” Chloe’s voice becomes more cautious. “She is my new boss…”

“Your new what?” My shrill is so loud, I’m sure she had to put the phone away from her ear.

“The company that hired me and Van to represent their brand, it’s Lexi’s.”

We spend the next few minutes trying to make sense of things and how they all came to this.
