Red Tie chuckles. “Give us a couple of weeks and nothing less than a hundred and ten percent, and we’ll give you either a contract or a handshake.”

“Bro”—Hudson throws his hands in the air—“what are you even doing? This isn’t just my time now; it’s our time. Say hell yes.”

I catch Mom and Jillian out of the corner of my eye. Mom wipes a tear away as she holds her phone up, no doubt recording this.

I can’t help but laugh and make a circle with my finger. “Yes. Hell yeah. Let’s do this.”

Revolutionary Park

“I was today years old when I drove my eight-year-old Chevy pickup into the parking lot of Revolutionary Park in Trenton, New Jersey, behind a slew of Ferraris and Lambos to start my major league fucking career?—”

“Shut the hell up,” I cut off Hudson, who just came off his second season in the NFL a few months ago.

“You puke yet?” he asks.

“No.” Curious, I ask, “Did you?”

“Fuck yes, I did,” he admits.

“Not that you need one after that, but just a reminder, I’m not as much of a pussy as you are.”

He barks out a laugh. “Oh, please. You didn’t just dive into the deep end headfirst, like I did. You got your feet wet in the kiddie pool first.”

“And my feet can land back down there at any time.”

“So what? You have a three-year contract for a cool mil each year regardless.”

“I wouldn’t have made that in thirty years teaching health and coaching.”

“To play a game you love.”

I can picture the grin on his face.

“You do get how wrong that is, right?” I ask.

“Rome, step off the soapbox and run it over with your truck. It’s not wrong. People pay big bucks to watch us beat our bodies up.” He snickers. “Well, not you. You’re basically playing golf and running in a circle.”

“You play seventeen regular-season games in seventeen weeks and have byes. I’ll play a hundred sixty-two in around twenty-six weeks.”
