Circle one.

XOXO,

Baseball

“This has been a lot of fun. For you all, I’ve played nice, but you four need the kind of help that only Jesus, your mama, or a good shrink can give you. I’m not any of them.”

The fools crack up.

Red Tie, holds up another legal pad, and I can’t see it, nor am I gonna look too hard because I think it would encourage them.

“You have a nice?—”

“All right, you four, go back to The Home and let us do this.” Someone snags the phone off the stand and shakes his head. “You can’t pick family, but you can pick baseball. Even though those four are far less mature than their kids.”

He flashes the camera around the room, and I see it’s full of people.

“Don’t piss on our find,” Big Guy growls.

“Show him the notepad. It’s fucking brilliant,” Dimples chimes in.

“You four need to step out of semiretirement or find a hobby,” a female huffs and stands in front of the camera, holding the pad up again.

This time, I can read it.

My heart pounds out of my chest as Hudson sits behind me, reading it, too.

Swear to God, I can’t breathe.

The phone is set back down to where it originally was, and now half a dozen people about my age are standing behind the men, all of them smiling.

“Hey, kid, when the world opens back up from the pandemic, we’d like you to join the Jersey Jags in Florida for spring training.” He holds up the notepad again.

Roman Hart,

Would you like to join the Jersey Jags for spring training and a second chance?

“We want to take a chance on you. How about you take a chance on us?” Big Guy smiles.

“Hell yes, he will.” Hudson dives on me.

“I have a job, kids who depend on me?—”

Hudson covers my mouth with his big paw. “Circle yes, you idiot.”

“We’re hearing the end of June, beginning of July, for training camps, but you know how things change.”

I push Hudson off me, and we both look at the screen again. They’re all smiling.
