After making the bed and showering, I lay there, starving and alone. The first of many tears slipped down my face and dropped against my pillow, but I could do this. I could go to school here and, if Minx didn’t believe me, then that was her choice.

I would make the best of it, no matter what.

I had to. It was me against the world now.

In the middle of the night, my wolf woke me up. My stomach was eating itself by then, and so I rifled through my suitcase until I found a random bag of trail mix and ate it like there was no other food on the planet.

I sat on the window seat of my little room and looked out over the city below. There were lights on in the other buildings and cars on the streets. People walking hand in hand along the sidewalk. The moon hung high in the sky, and my wolf craved her light on our fur.

But there was more.

My wolf had been vibrant and active all night, even as my human side fell asleep.

Something had her full attention.

Three somethings or someones had my full attention.

The way they reacted to me, you’d think I was a vampire or something.

I’d stay to myself as much as possible. Not their fault that I’d been thrust into their space. Some shifters were super territorial.

Yeah, that had to be it.

Chapter Four

I woke up groggy from a night of fitful sleep. Sleeping on an empty-ish stomach was no joke. Rushing through getting ready, with breakfast on my mind, I threw on some jeans and a black off-shoulder top with a knot on the side. I wore sneakers but didn’t bother with socks. That would come back to bite me later, but the blisters would heal fast.

I emptied my backpack of everything travel related and replaced those things with the notebooks and pens the woman in the front office had given me. Good thing because I’d had no time to go supply shopping the day before.

Shutting the door as quietly as possible behind me, I came chest to chest with one of my roommates. He put his hands on my shoulders, his grip firm but gentle at the same time. The smell of smoke and honey invaded my senses making gooseflesh break out along my arms. I shuddered, barely containing a whimper.

My wolf wanted him.

“Excuse me,” I said in a rush and tried to get around him. He side-stepped. I huffed out a sigh of exasperation. I was starving. This guy was breakfast-blocking me, and that wasn’t smart today.

“I’m Nolan,” he said. His luxurious tone wrapped itself around me, and I could’ve gone back to sleep from the comfort it gave me.

“I’m Ava. I’ll just get out of your way.” Despite my wolf’s demands I stay right there, peering into those beckoning brown eyes, I made another attempt to move but was again, blocked.

“Listen, about last night. We…we simply weren’t expecting a female to walk into our room while we were goofing off. I mean, this is an all-male suite after all.”

I nodded. “Well, if I had a chance to explain, which I didn’t since I was met with a wall of awkward silence, I would’ve told you that this was the last room they had on campus. At all. It was this or sleep on one of the tables in the library, and I’m pretty sure that’s frowned upon.”

He huffed out a laugh and scratched at the back of his neck. “Fate sure is funny sometimes.” The words came out in a mumble, but my shifter hearing picked them up just fine.

“What was that?” I asked. “Doesn’t matter. Look, this is nicer than last night but I’m starving. I really need to get to the dining hall, and I’m sure I’ll get lost along the way, so if you’ll excuse me.”

I ducked under his arm and made my way to the door but right outside found the other two guys waiting, arms crossed over their chests. Gods bless the sleeves of the shirt of one of them because they were certainly struggling. The other smiled slightly and his cheeks pinked.

He was adorable.

“Good morning,” I said.

“Ava”—Nolan caught up with me—“this is Wolfe.” The big one nodded. “And Lex.” The blushy one smiled wider.

“It’s nice to meet you, but I’ve got to go.”

“We will walk with you,” Lex offered. “That way, you won’t get lost walking to the dining hall. I can smell your hunger from here. We can’t have our new roommate starving.”
