So many things happened at once, like a blip in time.

Wolfe’s arms wrapped around my waist and pulled me back while Nolan took my hand in his. Lex’s wolf padded in between Seraphine and me and let out a growl so loud that several students slapped their hands over their ears to protect them from the powerful sound.

Seraphine stepped backward and tripped over her own feet, making her land on her ass.

I almost laughed if it wasn’t for Lex baring his teeth and snapping at her.

“Lex,” I called out to the enormous wolf with shiny black fur and one gray paw, “she’s not worth it.”

He looked back at me.

“He’s not yours!” Seraphine said.

The wolf stepped closer to her, a predator about to strike.

“Lex, it’s okay. Please,” I begged him. There weren’t a lot of strict rules at the Werewolf Academy, but not attacking other students in wolf or human form was a big one.

He huffed out an angry breath through his nose. I almost laughed. The big, bad wolf was upset because I stopped him from biting her or worse. Then again, maybe he was simply trying to scare her. I couldn’t see him attacking a female.

Heels clicked across the floor. “Lex Abrams, shift back. Now,” the headmistress commanded. “Don’t make me tell you again, Mr. Canis. Shift and then in my office.”

So his surname was Canis. A new thing about my mate.

Lex licked my hand before walking out of the dining hall and shifting there, back into a human. He’d shredded his clothes, but most shifters thought nothing of nakedness. The whole fuss about me when shifting was kind of a dating thing that came up sometimes. Still, I hoped someone would give him some clothes before he had to report to her office.

Wolfe leaned close to me. “Let’s get out of here.”

I almost cried when Lex left my view.

He had defended me.

His wolf had defended me.

Mated males did that. Perhaps their parents or a family member or the oldest of friends, as well, but that stunning wolf of his had protected his mate.

Me.

I was his mate. His. Nolan’s. Wolfe’s.

Chapter Seventeen

We ordered in some takeout, which I had no idea was possible. Nolan put on a movie while we ate Chinese at the wobbly coffee table. I sat cross-legged, one knee on Wolfe’s thigh and the other on Nolan’s. Nestled between my mates.

Exactly where I wanted to be.

I showered a second time, since I felt like I still had soup on me, and got into my pajamas, expecting Lex to be back by the time I finished, but no.

“I’m worried,” I confessed to Wolfe who was up reading. He was wearing only gray pajama pants. Had he read one of my favorite romance novels? Him in those pants were enough to make me want to climb him and let him mate me right there in the living room.

He patted his thighs. “Come here. I’m worried too. They won’t expel him, I don’t think. He hasn’t had an incident since he came here.”

I sat in Wolfe’s lap and rested my head against his chest. Everything with him was so natural. We were made for each other. He wrapped one arm around my back and held the book between us, open to the page he’d been on.

“What do you mean? He had one before he came here?”

Nothing but care and concern lit Wolfe’s deep-brown eyes. “His story to tell you.”

His words must’ve conjured Lex because he opened the door and came in, looking the worse for wear.
